Yin Jifan had a habit of heavy drinking. In the spring of the Guiwei year, he suffered from wind-warmth cough and asthma. He had slight chills and fever. The pulse was floating and rapid. This was due to warm pathogenic factors invading the lungs, causing the lungs to lose their descending and purifying function. He was prescribed Qiaoqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus), Tiaohuang (Scutellariae Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam), and Lingyangjiao (Saigae Tataricae Cornu), among other herbs. After one dose, he recovered.

Mr. Guo, around forty years old, had long suffered from phlegm-fluid retention. Every time severe cold arrived, his illness would flare up, causing asthma, coughing, and inability to lie down. For over ten years, he had been greatly distressed by it. In the winter of the Jiashen year, due to contracting cold, his illness recurred. He felt a patch on his back, the size of a palm, as cold. There was a sound like a water chicken in his throat. The cunkou pulse was floating and tight. He was given Xiao Qinglong Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction). After two doses, he stabilized. In winter, moxibustion was applied to Feishu (BL13), Dazhui (GV14), and Zhongwan (CV12) acupoints. Afterwards, the illness did not recur again. Whenever fluid pathogens are deeply embedded in the shu-akupoints of the zang-fu organs, when an attack occurs, using moxibustion can definitely eradicate the root cause. It is regrettable that many people do not believe this, leading to lifelong diseases. This is truly lamentable.

Mrs. Ma suffered from asthma and vomiting in summer. Her head sweated profusely like rain. She could not eat anything. This had lasted for two days. She invited me to diagnose her. Her pulse was large and rapid. The tongue coating was slightly white, yellow in the center, and red at the edges. I said this was due to summerheat pathogenic factors filling the lungs and stomach, causing qi to fail to descend properly, resulting in asthma. Therefore, Tinglizi (Descurainiae Semen seu Lepidii Semen), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Nanhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Pipaye (Eriobotryae Folium), Biyu San (Jade Green Powder), and Chuanlian (Coptidis Rhizoma) were prescribed. After one dose, she recovered.

Mr. Guo Shaoweng, around forty years old, managed a rice business and was extremely fatigued. In the autumn of the Guiyou year, he contracted wind-cold with cough and consulted me. The superficial pulse was deficient and large; the cunkou pulse was choppy and small. He had spontaneous sweating profusely. I said this was a wind-cold syndrome. However, the pulse image was extremely deficient. The cunkou pulse should be large but was instead small. This indicated internal injury with slight external contraction. If dispersing medicines were taken, sweat would leak uncontrollably, and deficient yang would float upward. The method should be tonification. Yu Pingfeng San (Jade Windscreen Powder) was prescribed for two doses, and he improved.

Mr. Feng, around forty years old, had a constitutionally deficient quality and further contracted summerheat pathogenic factors. His pulse was extremely deficient, large, and rapid. When relatives came to visit, his tongue was crimson, eyes red, face showed floating yang (redness on the cheeks while the rest of the face is pale), head sweated profusely, eyes stared straight ahead and were confused. I said the original disease was summerheat pathogenic factors not yet fully penetrated, but true yuan (original qi) was extremely deficient. The medical situation was very difficult. One must first consolidate his yuan. Urgently use Sini Jia Renshen Tang (Four Reversal Decoction plus Ginseng), supplemented with Longgu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi et Scapulae) and Muli (Concha Ostreae). Assisted by bile and child's urine. Using one cup of earth well water as a guide. Decoct strongly, wait until cool, and administer slowly. After about one hour of taking the medicine, his mouth closed, spirit settled, and eyes could move. But he had extreme thirst and dry tongue. Summerheat signs fully appeared. Let him eat watermelon. Spirit and qi instantly felt refreshed. Diagnosed again the next day. Pulse image slightly gathered, had root, and was rapid, reduced by one beat. Established Zhuye Shigao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction). After two doses, he could rise and speak. But felt tired and ate little. This was due to consumption of stomach fluids and lingering heat. Therefore, Shashen (Glehniae Radix), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Sheng Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata), Yinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), and Sheng Bian Dou (Phaseoli Multiflori Semen) were used to nourish lungs and stomach, and clear residual heat. After several doses, he stabilized. Xu Huixi often used this method. It is not easy to use it well. Because this syndrome resembles Baihu Tang syndrome. If Baihu Tang is used from the beginning, death is certain. How to distinguish? It entirely depends on the deficiency or excess of the pulse.
