Tuomo (Pushing and Rubbing) Method is the authentic secret technique passed down from my master. By applying Tuomo according to the disease condition, there is an effect as immediate as raising a staff and seeing its shadow. Because later generations did not receive instruction in these manual techniques, this method was abandoned and nearly lost to history. This is largely because children's Zang-Fu organs are tender and fragile; upon invasion by Wind-Cold, Summer-Heat, or Dampness pathogens, fever may arise immediately. Or, due to fright, Liver and Gallbladder Qi floats upward, heat arises internally, and blood heat boils vigorously. If physicians cannot perceive the root cause behind the symptoms and indiscriminately use methods to release the exterior or clear the interior with chaotic prescriptions, then for children with such tender and fragile Zang-Fu organs, which struggle even to transform and transport milk and food, how can they withstand the harsh nature of strong medicines? Would this not merely increase iatrogenic illness? How does it compare to the Tuomo method, which is both stable and rapidly effective? Recently, this art has become prevalent, yet those who have mastered it are rare—one or two at most. The method uses the five fingers of the hand to correspond to the Five Zang organs: the fingertips belong to the Zang, and the proximal phalangeal joints belong to the Fu. Through clearing heat, warming cold, draining excess, and tonifying deficiency, one distinguishes between pushing forward and backward, rotating left and pushing right, or rotating right and pushing left, to determine the methods of warming, clearing, tonifying, and draining. There are prescribed numbers of repetitions, either three hundred or five hundred; one must not push randomly. Additionally, rubbing is used to regulate Qi flow, and pinching is used to settle fright and calm the spirit. The face also has specific corresponding areas, and the abdomen, limbs, and hands and feet can all be subjected to Tuomo. There are ten major hand formulas for operation, which are the secret methods of my master. If one can master this skill and widely practice it in the world, then children's illnesses will perhaps be free from the fear of premature death.
Children's Zang-Fu organs are tender and fragile, and medicines entering the body are difficult to transform and transport; therefore, medication should be light. For example, when dealing with external Wind-Cold pathogens, herbs that release the muscle layer and disperse the exterior are sufficient at doses of only a few fen per ingredient. The number of herbal ingredients should also not be excessive. If there are too many ingredients and heavy dosages, the medicinal force will exceed the needs of the disease, and the illness certainly will not be cured. Only in cases of Smallpox/Chickenpox (Dou) and Gan syndrome (Gan Ji), should heavier dosages be used rather than lighter ones. If the dosage is too light, the medicinal strength will be insufficient, and the disease will not be cured. Why is this? Dou and Gan syndromes involve the complete manifestation of congenital Fire-Toxin on the exterior; thus, humans contract them only once in a lifetime, unlike other diseases that occur frequently. One can understand this naturally by observing Ye Tianshi's medical cases.
The use of herbal formulas to treat diseases began with Yi Yin. When Six Excess pathogens are located in the Exterior, Muscle Layer, Ying-Wei, or Six Fu Organs, decoctions are appropriate. For pathogens in the Exterior, sweating is indicated; for those in the Muscle Layer, resolving the exterior is indicated; for those in Ying-Wei, harmonizing is indicated; having entered the Six Fu Organs, if located above the diaphragm, vomiting is indicated; if in the intestines and stomach, purging is indicated. However, for diseases in the Zang organs, decoctions alone cannot fully address them. For instance, Lung diseases often use powder forms because the Lung resides at the highest position, requiring light medication. Heart, Liver, and Spleen diseases may require pills or elixirs because their locations are deep and secluded, necessitating slow treatment. The Kidney is mostly deficient and rarely excess, so it may require pills or pastes. The *Neijing* states: "The Kidneys store Essence; where Essence is insufficient, it is supplemented with substantial flavors." Therefore, for Kidney deficiency, substances with thick flavors or "sentient flesh-and-blood" materials are suitable, made into pastes or pills. Through resonance of similar categories, efficacy can be achieved. If the disease is in the meridians, involving pain migration, spasms, or flaccidity, fine needles must be used to regulate the exterior, assisted by medicinal wine to harmonize the interior. Thus, the meridians harmonize, the tunnels open, and the disease resolves. Relying solely on oral medication will certainly not cure the disease. For example, infantile convulsions include twenty-four types; fright-related disorders require massage and moxibustion. Infantile erysipelas and adult blood stasis require scarification (Bian Fa). Scarification removes bad blood. For chronic conditions caused by deep-seated Cold and stubborn accumulation, as well as ulcers with deficiency-cold, non-healing over years, or blackened sunken muscles, moxibustion is required to restore vitality. Swellings, pain, and masses are suitable for plasters. However, symptoms differ in Yin and Yang, and medicines differ in Cold and Heat properties. For joint gout and bone-joint pain, fumigation and steaming are required to draw out toxins. Therefore, disease locations are categorized into Exterior, Muscle Layer, Ying-Wei, Meridians, Sinews and Bones, Qi and Blood, Zang-Fu, and Upper/Middle/Lower Jiao, each with specific therapeutic principles established by the Sages, which remain unchangeable. Later physicians, failing to comprehend these, often use formulas to treat all diseases indiscriminately. Failure to cure leads to lifelong ailments. Thus, physicians must deeply study ancient methods and read extensively to master these techniques and apply them with divine proficiency.
