A sedan chair porter's skin was perforated like holes chewed by insects, numbering in the thousands. It resembled sores but was not exactly sores; it was incredibly itchy and had not healed for years. The condition worsened in summer and autumn and improved in spring and winter. He sought my treatment. Observing his condition, it seemed there were parasites, but medical texts did not record a treatment method for this. I recalled that long-standing tinea capitis (ringworm of the head) could produce parasites, and there was a method of using arsenic trioxide to boil eggs to kill them. Thus, I borrowed this method for treatment. Two duck eggs were used, shells removed, mixed with two qian of arsenic trioxide powder, added with scallions, and simmered in lard until fragrant. While hot, it was applied to the affected area and tightly bound with cloth. The parasites, attracted by the aroma, emerged to feed, causing extreme bone-penetrating itching. After cooling, the dressing was removed, revealing countless extremely fine parasites drawn out. Subsequently, bitter-cold detoxifying and damp-clearing herbal decoctions were used for warm washing several times, completely curing the lesion. He stated that many in his profession suffered from this, never cured before, unaware of such a miraculous treatment. This opened a new pathway. Any unconventional method, though for minor ailments, brings infinite joy when discovered through careful consideration.
A twelve-year-old girl suffered from severe chest pain, rolling and crying on her bed. Digestive-promoting and qi-moving medications were ineffective. A small amount of Opium Paste (A Fuyou Gao), dissolved in boiling water, was administered, initially effective. Later, it became ineffective again. Upon examination, her muscles were emaciated, her complexion sallow with crab-claw-like markings (spider nevi). Inquiry revealed anal pain resembling hemorrhoids. Her pulse was sometimes wiry and tight, sometimes thready and rapid with intermittent pauses. This corresponded to the Huo Huo disease (Huo Huo Syndrome) pattern described in *Jin Gui Yao Lue* (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet). Therefore, relying on the anti-parasitic methods from *Wai Tai Mi Yao* (Prescriptions of the Outer Library), I prescribed equal parts of Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Fuzi, 附子), Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin, 桂心), Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Dahuang, 大黄), Carpesii Fructus (Heshi, 鹤虱), and Polyporus (Leiwuan, 雷丸), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang, 干姜), and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), ground into coarse powder. Each dose was two to three qian, taken with boiling water and half a spoonful of honey. After two doses, her appetite gradually returned, and muscles slowly regenerated. For six or seven years since then, the disease has not recurred.
A man from the Plain Blue Banner, just reaching adulthood, suffered from severe abdominal pain. I was invited to diagnose him. His complexion was sallow and dull, muscles wasted away. His pulse was deficient and rapid, fluctuating between large and small, resembling boiling soup. His tongue was red with tiny white spots in the center. The illness had persisted for a long time. I said: This condition began with dietary indiscretion; spicy and rich foods generated heat and parasites. Over time, the parasites grew larger and more numerous. Now, the essence and fat of the zang-fu organs have been entirely eroded by the parasites. Even with divine medicine, salvation is impossible. His family pleaded repeatedly. Initially reluctant, I finally prescribed Lian Mei Tang (Coptis and Mume Decoction). In the afternoon, they invited me again, but I politely declined. Two days later, he indeed passed away.
