If one studies Buddhism without contemplating its profound truths, one cannot comprehend the mysteries of medicine. If the mind is not properly settled, what benefit can there be in one's actions and intentions? The Zen mind shines brightly within like a pearl of wisdom, and the spiritual mirror contains all things. One reads the books of the ancient emperors and resolves to become a capable minister. Once tonsured, everything follows destiny. Carving insects and fish (referring to philology or trivial studies) is regarded as essential to life; gathering herbs and plants exhausts one's spirit. Thinking of the Buddha's compassion, a mere bow of the head grants forgiveness; pitying the stubborn troubles of sentient beings, raising ten fingers (acupuncture or massage) saves people.
When incense made from Biota seeds burns in the censer, plum blossoms illuminate the curtains, orchids are picked for their beauty, and fragrance surrounds the straw sandals; Atractylodes and Ganoderma contain harmony, and cloud-like cotton robes seem to generate mist. This medical skill is worthy of Master Tai (a reference to Sun Simiao, known as the King of Medicine), and can be called extraordinary like the daughter of the otter (a legendary figure skilled in medicine). The Qingnang (medical texts or skills) is carried on the monk's shoulder, and purple books (precious medical manuscripts) are held in Buddhist hands. Moreover, sacred scriptures are collected from the Phoenix Palace (imperial library), possessing the *Jinkui Yufan* (Golden Cabinet Jade Formula); treasures are sought in the Dragon Palace, with ivory tags and brocade spines (refining book bindings). Through this, one deduces the Six Qi, examines the Five Elements, carefully distinguishes Yin and Yang, and details the pulse positions.
Opening the bellows of Heaven and Earth (metaphor for natural qi transformation), one holds the balance of life and death. Although Guo Yu (a famous physician of the Han Dynasty) is distant, the golden needle is secretly passed down (transmission of esoteric methods); Chun Yi (Cang Gong, a famous physician of the Han Dynasty) was already miraculous, and the profound mystery is quietly explored. Planting apricot groves, cultivating talent need not rely on Dong Feng (Eastern Han physician who planted apricots to exchange for grain); the precious springs and orange wells (associated with Su Dan, a Daoist immortal known for healing) – irrigation need not envy Su Dan. The technique operates smoothly like Cook Ding carving an ox, and the Way expands like a blade moving with ease. Taking refuge, the heart follows desire, resembling a deity dwelling on land. Cutting flesh (an extreme act of filial piety or sacrifice) becomes the cause of dismemberment, fulfilling the vows of Bodhisattvas.
Recently, emerging from the mountains to seek the Way, carts are filled with rare characters; entering the world to discuss Zen, distinguished guests fill the seats. Conveying fragrant news to humble scholars, forging stone-like bonds with master physicians. Ashamed that my promotion lacks literary grace, yet pleased that guidance and nourishment have methods. Love me, love me, wandering the lake to comprehend the message from the West (Buddhism coming from India); Lovely person, lovely person, floating on the sea towards Zhongnan (retreating to seclusion). On the third day of the latter part of the second month of the spring of Gengyin year in the Guangxu era, Xu Jizhi, styled Pingyi, from Fayajingqiao in Jinzhou Township, inscribed this at a guesthouse in Hulin.
