The aforementioned formula belongs to tonifying medicines. Its therapeutic characteristic is tonifying the upper body while treating the lower body; its action is slow but enduring, not seeking rapid results. Therefore, Tianmendong, Renshen, and Tusizi serve as the sovereign drugs (Jun), aiming to unblock the Kidney, calm the spirit, strengthen Yin, and fill the essence. Wuweizi, Maimendong, Xingren, Fuling, Gouqi, Niuxi, and Dihuang serve as the minister drugs (Chen), aiming to astringe Qi, dispel dampness, cool the blood, and nourish blood. Juhua, Jili, Shihu, Roushouyuong, Chuanxiong, Gancao, Zhike, Shanyao, and Qingxiangzi serve as the assistant drugs (Zuo), aiming to treat wind and deficiency, benefit Qi, and detoxify. Fangfeng, Huanglian, Jueming, Lingyang, and Wuxi serve as the courier drugs (Shi), aiming to dissipate stagnation, purge heat, resolve knots, and brighten the eyes. This formula is suitable for diseases where Yin is weak and cannot harmonize with Yang. This represents a treatment method that follows the natural course of the disease.
The Guanyin Eye Treatment Formula is recorded in the "Tripitaka". A patient suffered from eye cataracts obscuring the pupil, and various physicians failed to cure him. He thought only Buddha could save him, so he worshipped Buddha very devoutly. In a dream, a person wearing black clothes told him: "If you want clear vision, you should take Xiongdan Wan (Bear Gallbladder Pill); the formula is in the Tripitaka." Later, following this formula, he prepared and took the medicine. Within ten days, his vision cleared, and his eyes became sharp. Subsequently, he cured many other people's eye diseases successfully.
