Bai Mian Ding (White-Face Carbuncle) arises between the two cheeks and above the center of the face. It is caused by long-standing accumulation of cold generating wind; wind generates heat; heat generates fire qi, which rushes upward to the face, producing this toxic lesion. Initially, Tie Gu San (Iron Hoop Powder) should be applied (formula see previous section), followed by Zhui Du Tuo Li Yin (Poison-Chasing Interior-Supporting Decoction) or Gou Bao Wan (Dog Gallstone Pill) for better efficacy.
Eighteen-Ingredient Poison-Chasing Interior-Supporting Decoction
Consists of Perilla Leaf (Zi Su Ye), Platycodon Root (Jie Geng), Bitter Orange (Zhi Ke), Licorice Root (Gan Cao), Saposhnikovia Root (Fang Feng), Bupleurum Root (Chai Hu), Ligusticum Rhizome (Chuan Xiong), Notopterygium Rhizome (Qiang Huo), Angelica Dahurica Root (Bai Zhi), White Peony Root (Bai Shao), Forsythia Fruit (Lian Qiao), Chinese Angelica Root (Dang Gui), Rhino Horn (Xi Jiao), Frankincense (Ru Xiang), Myrrh (Mo Yao), Coptis Rhizome (Huang Lian), Honeysuckle Flower (Er Hua), Realgar (Xiong Huang). Grind all into fine powder, mix with wine and flour paste to form pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. Take one pill per dose, swallowing it together with three green onions, washed down with hot water. The treatment is considered effective when sweating occurs.
Xu Ding (Beard Carbuncle) arises at the upper lip where beard hair grows. It is caused by heat in the Spleen and Lung meridians, with toxic vapors accumulating and knotting. Initially, apply Tie Gu San (Iron Hoop Powder); after ulceration, apply Sheng Ji San (Tissue-Regenerating Powder). Internally, take Qing Gan Liu Qi Yin (Liver-Clearing Qi-Flowing Decoction) (formula see Yan Dan section).
Ru Yong (Breast Carbuncle) arises on the center of the breast. It belongs to the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. At the initial stage, there is invariably itching, which can be resolved by applying moxibustion for more than ten moxa cones. If it develops into a severe toxin, the treatment method is the same as Ru Chui (Acute Mastitis). What is Ru Pi (Breast Lump)? It refers to a hard, painless mass resembling a stubborn stone, which forms over three to four months.
Jia Xie (Flanking Hypochondriac Abscess) arises below the two hypochondria. It is caused by accumulated heat in the Liver Meridian leading to stagnation of Qi and Blood. At the first sign, use Yi Sao Dan (One-Sweep Powder) and Shi Xiao Bing (Laughing-Pain Cake). If internal resolution is delayed too much, it becomes difficult to treat; only Qing Gan Liu Qi Yin (Liver-Clearing Qi-Flowing Decoction) should be used (formulas see previous sections). Apply external medicaments.
