Bao (Embrace) implies nurturing; Long (Dragon) symbolizes a creature of pure Yang. Children's constitution is characterized as "pure Yang without Yin," so when ill, they tend to develop heat syndromes; excessive heat generates wind. Therefore, this medicine must be used to nourish Yin and balance Yang, preventing excess. Furthermore, the Azure Dragon corresponds to the East and is associated with the Liver Wood element. In children, the Liver is often in excess while the Spleen is often deficient. Thus, this medicine aims to suppress the Liver and support the Spleen, hence its name Baolong Wan (Embracing Dragon Pill). It treats conditions characterized by robust physique, high fever, lethargy with coarse breathing, or excessive phlegm causing coughing, as well as convulsions and spasms due to wind-stroke (Jing Feng).
