Pulse: In cold strike (Zhong Han), the pulse is tight and choppy, with both Yin and Yang qi being excessive. According to the law, there should be no sweating; if sweating occurs, it endangers life. Cold strike refers to cold pathogenic factors directly invading the Three Yin meridians. (This condition is more severe than cold damage; if not treated urgently, death may occur within a day or night.)
Huiyang Jiutang (Return to Yang Emergency Decoction): Treats early-stage cold damage without headache or body heat, but with aversion to cold, cold limbs extending beyond elbows and knees, abdominal pain with vomiting and diarrhea, spitting white foam, flowing cold saliva, trembling, pale face like scraped knife, curling up in bed, no thirst, and a deep, slow, and weak pulse. This indicates true cold syndrome where cold has struck the Yin meridians, not transmitted from the Yang meridians.
Ingredients: Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (remove rhizome), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (remove rhizome), Fuling (Poria), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Banxia (Pinelliae Tuber) (processed with ginger juice), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Dafuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (roasted, remove skin and navel), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (honey-fried). If vomiting saliva or small abdominal pain, add Yuzhu (Evodiae Fructus) salt-fried. If no pulse, add one spoonful of Zhuyedan (Porci Bile). If diarrhea persists, add Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Shengma ( Cimicifugae Rhizoma). If vomiting persists, add Jiangzhi (Zingiberis Recens Juice).
Crush the above herbs into coarse powder, decoct with fresh ginger, and take warm. If medicines are unavailable in an emergency, use Congyi method (scallion moxibustion/ironing) or moxa-heat Guanyuan (CV 4) and Qihai (CV 6) acupoints for 20-30 moxa cones to allow heat to penetrate internally and force pathogens out externally, thereby restoring Yang qi. Once the patient regains consciousness slightly, administer ginger juice and decocted Huiyang Tang.
When cold strikes the Taiyin meridian, pain occurs at the Zhongwan (CV 12) region.
Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction): Treats immediate Taiyin disease with spontaneous diarrhea without thirst, heavy cold and vomiting, abdominal pain with diarrhea, duck-like loose stools, ascariasis convulsion, cholera, etc.
Ingredients: Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 2.5 qian).
Crush into one dose, decoct with two zhong of water until reduced to eight parts, remove dregs, and take warm. If Kidney qi moves urgently, remove Baizhu and add Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) 2 qian. If vomiting is frequent, remove Baizhu and add Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) 3 qian. If diarrhea is frequent, double the dosage of Baizhu and Renshen, add water for decoction. If cold is heavy, add Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 1.5 qian. If abdominal fullness/pain, diarrhea, and deep, slow, faint pulse occur, add Paofuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 2 qian. If cold injury leads to Yin jaundice due to weak pulse and deficient qi, add Yinchenhao (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) 2 qian to this formula. If cholera with muscle cramps occurs, add Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) calcined 5 qian. If epigastric fullness with stomach cold, or cholera with vomiting/diarrhea without thirst, chest fullness not yet forming Jie Xiong (chest binding), or Jueyin hunger unable to eat, vomiting food and roundworms after eating, use Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill). Grind the ingredients into fine powder, mix with refined honey to make pills the size of a bullet. Take one pill per dose, dissolved in half a zhan of warm water.
When cold strikes the Shaoyin meridian, pain occurs in the umbilical and abdominal region.
Wuji San (Five Accumulations Powder): Treats cold strike and cold pathogen invasion, headache and body pain, stiffness and tension in waist and back, aversion to cold, vomiting, abdominal pain. It treats regardless of external wind-cold invasion, internal injury from raw/cold food, or cold-dampness lodging in collaterals causing waist/back soreness, as well as amenorrhea in women.
Ingredients: Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (stir-fried with ginger juice), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (soaked in rice wash water), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (stir-fried), Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus) (bran-fried), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) (remove rhizome), Banxia (Pinelliae Tuber) (ginger-processed, each 1 qian), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Guangui (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (each 0.5 qian), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) (0.8 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (0.3 qian).
Crush into coarse powder, decoct with three slices of fresh ginger and one jujube, take warm.
When cold strikes the Jueyin meridian, pain occurs in the lower abdomen.
Sini Tang (Frigid Extremities Decoction): Treats immediate Taiyin disease with spontaneous diarrhea without thirst, and Three Yin syndromes with faint pulse nearly imperceptible and cold extremities. "Si Ni" refers to cold extremities. Ingredients: Dafuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (one piece, remove skin and navel, break into slices, raw), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (honey-fried, 6 qian), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (5 qian).
Crush into three doses, decoct with water, take warm. Recovery occurs with slight sweating.
Moxibustion Method for Yin Syndromes: Qihai (CV 6) is 1.5 cun below the umbilicus, Dantian is 2 cun below the umbilicus, Guanyuan (CV 4) is 3 cun below the umbilicus. Moxa-burn 14 cones (two sevens). If hands and feet become warm, pulse returns, and consciousness is restored, and sweating occurs where there was none, the patient will survive. If not warm and unconscious, death ensues.
Umbilical Steaming Method: Use Shexiang (Moschus), Banxia (Pinelliae Tuber), and Zhaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus) each one zi amount, grind into powder, fill into the umbilicus. Place thin slices of fresh ginger on the umbilicus, apply moxa fire on the ginger slice to steam. Moxa-burn 14 cones, then moxa-burn Guanyuan (CV 4) and Qihai (CV 6) each 14 cones. Heat penetrates internally, cold is forced out externally, Yin recedes and Yang restores.
Umbilical Ironing Method: Tie a bunch of scallion heads, cut off leaves leaving white roots, slice into cakes about 2 cun thick, stack 4-5 cakes together. First, fill the umbilicus with Shexiang (Moschus) and Liuhuang (Sulfur) each two zi amounts. Place the scallion cake on the umbilicus, iron it with a hot iron containing fire. If the cake burns through, replace and continue ironing. Heat enters the abdomen to unblock Yang qi. If urination or defecation is blocked, stop when通畅 (unblocked).
Umbilical Rubbing Method: Use Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus) 2-3 he, bran 1 sheng, salt 1 he. Mix well and stir-fry hot. Wrap in silk cloth. Rub and iron hotly up and down the abdomen. Naturally effective.
