The pathogenesis of Asthma and Stridor (Xiao Hou) is primarily due to Phlegm, and the Vomiting Method (Tou Fa) is suitable for treatment; however, there are cases of deficiency where vomiting is contraindicated. In treating Stridor, one must adhere to a bland diet, avoid using purely cold-natured herbs, and must incorporate herbs that disperse pathogens. "Asthma and Stridor" refers to the obstruction of Lung Qi by phlegm in the orifices of the Lung.
Wuhu Erchen Tang (Five Tigers and Two Aged Peel Decoction): Treats asthma, stridor, rapid breathing, and copious phlegm.
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄), 1 qian; Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁), 1 qian; Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏), 2 qian; Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 陈皮), 1 qian; Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Banxia, 半夏), 1 qian (stir-fried with ginger juice); Poria (Fuling, 茯苓), 2 qian (peeled); Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 人参), 8 fen; Fine Tea (Xicha), a pinch; Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Chenxiang, 沉香), 5 fen; Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang, 木香), 5 fen (ground separately in water and added).
Crush these ingredients into one dose. Add three slices of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜) and three stalks of Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (Congbai, 葱白). Decoct in water and take orally.
Dingchuan Tang (Calming Wheezing Decoction): Treats asthma, stridor, and rapid breathing.
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄), 3 qian; Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁), 1.5 qian (skin and tip removed); Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩), remove rotten parts; Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Banxia, 半夏) (prepared with ginger); Mori Cortex (Sangbaipi, 桑白皮) (honey-fried); Perillae Fructus (Suzi, 苏子) (washed to remove soil); Farfarae Flos (Kuandonghua, 款冬花) and its stamen, each 2 qian; Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), 1 qian; Ginkgo Semen (Baiguo, 白果), 21 pieces (shelled, chopped, and stir-fried until yellow).
Crush these ingredients into one dose. Decoct in water and take orally.
Zijin Dan (Purple Gold Pill): Whenever weather changes indicating impending rain trigger wheezing attacks, leading to inability to sit or lie down comfortably and loss of appetite, this indicates cold-phlegm accumulated in the Lung orifices. The cold qi from cloudy weather enters through the back, mouth, and nose, causing Lung distension and producing sounds. This disease may cause suffering for life or be transmitted from mother to child. Take this pill at every onset. After no more than seven or eight doses, when the sputum becomes fishy-smelling and turns white upon expectoration, the root of the disease is eradicated.
Realgar (Baipi, 白砒) [Note: Arsenic trioxide], 1 qian (used raw); Alum (Kufan, 枯矾), 3 qian (ground separately); Fermented Soybean (Dandouchi, 淡豆豉), 1 liang (from Jiangxi province; moisten skin, steam, grind into paste, then mix with the powders of the previous two ingredients).
Roll into pills the size of mung beans. At the first sign of an attack, take seven pills with cold tea. For severe cases, take nine pills. Discontinue when wheezing ceases; do not increase the dosage further. Exercise extreme caution! For children, one or two pills are highly effective.
Zhuli Huatan Wan (Bamboo Juice Phlegm-Resolving Pill): Treats asthma lasting ten or more years without cure; long-term administration yields results (see formula under "Phlegm-Fluid Retention").
Sanbai Wan (Three Whites Pill): Treats various types of cough and asthmatic breathing.
Pinelliae Tuber (Banxia, 半夏) [White variety], 1 liang (used raw); Realgar (Baipi, 白砒) [Arsenic trioxide], 3 qian; Alum (Baifan, 白矾), 3 qian; Realgar (Xionghuang, 雄黄) (transparent and high quality), 3 qian; Crotonis Fructus Kernel (Badou Ren, 巴豆仁) (oil removed), 3 qian.
First, melt the Alum, add the Realgar powder into the molten Alum, bake dry, remove, and grind thoroughly. Then stir-fry until it resembles sand. Mix with the other medicines into a fine powder. Use wheat paste to form pills the size of millet seeds. Adults take ten pills; children take three to five pills. For cough, take with tea; for asthmatic breathing, take with Mulberry Bark Decoction (Sangbaipi Tang).
Formula for Treating Accumulated Stridor: Take one chicken egg, gently crack the shell slightly without damaging the inner membrane, and soak it in a urine chamber for three to four days. Remove at night, cook thoroughly, and eat. This is extremely effective because chicken eggs can dispel wind-phlegm.
Qingjin Wan (Blue Gold Pill): Treats asthma, specifically those triggered by rich and strong flavors.
Brassicae Semenis Albi Radish Seed (Luobozhi, 萝卜子) washed clean, steamed, dried, and ground into powder. Soak in ginger juice, use steamed bread dough to form small pills. Take twenty pills per dose, swallowed with saliva.
