A five-year-old child was frightened after watching a temple fair and seeing painted ghost faces. The black part of both eyes rolled inward, and the white part rolled outward, with vision reduced to barely seeing a line. Several physicians could not cure him, so they sought my treatment.
I said: "Has this child ever had smallpox?" The reply was: "No." "It can be treated after the smallpox erupts." A month later, smallpox became prevalent. The child developed fever, showing signs of impending eruption, and his family indeed summoned me. I extracted juice from cotton rouge soaked in water, boiled it slowly into a paste, and applied it to the upper and lower eyelids of the child's eyes. Applied twice a day, until after the smallpox scabs fell off, the eyes returned to normal.
