Book: Wan Bing Hui Chun (Recovery from All Diseases)
Author: Gong Tingxian
Dynasty: Ming
Chapter: Amenorrhea
Category: Comprehensive
[English Translation]
For women in their prime whose menstruation has ceased, this is due to blood excess and qi stagnation; specialized purgative treatment should be employed.
Tongjing Wan (Menstruation-Promoting Pill) treats amenorrhea accompanied by dry blood qi (qi constrained by intra-abdominal blood stasis).
Mylabris (twenty grains, stir-fried with glutinous rice) Rhubarb (five qian) Peach Kernel (forty-nine grains)
Grind the above into powder, mix with wine paste to form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take five to seven pills on an empty stomach with warm wine; for severe cases, take fifteen pills. If amenorrhea is caused by blood deficiency, administer with Siwu Tang (Four-Substance Decoction).
Tongjing Ganlu Wan (Menstruation-Promoting Sweet Dew Pill) treats menstrual obstruction, metrorrhagia (profuse non-menstrual bleeding), intestinal wind (hematochezia), red and white leukorrhea, bloody strangury and qi strangury (painful/difficult urination), postpartum retained blood, as well as the five labors and seven injuries (various deficiency syndromes) in men and women, and bone-steaming fever in children. It is also effective for conditions arising from the failure of yin blood and yang essence to interact between husband and wife.
Rhubarb (four liang, soaked for one day in juice extracted from four liang of Safflower; discard safflower; four liang, soaked for one day in urine of a young boy mixed with two qian of salt; discard urine; four liang, soaked for one day in good wine until soft, sliced like apricot kernels, dried; add Croton seed, peeled, thirty-five grains, stir-fry together until yellow, discard Croton seed; four liang, soaked for one day in light vinegar with four liang of Angelica sinensis; discard Angelica). Combine the four portions of Rhubarb together, add two liang of Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Nanmuxiang) and five qian of Carbonized Herb (Baicaoshuang), grind into fine powder. Form pills with rice paste made from decoction of Angelica sinensis and vinegar-soaked Safflower, size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take thirty to forty pills on an empty stomach with warm wine.
Fanjing Wan (Reverse Menstruation Pill) treats amenorrhea in women, regardless of whether it is recent or chronic.
Frankincense Myrrh Child's Tea Croton Seed (shelled) Scallion White (each five fen) Mylabris (five grains)
Grind the above into powder, pound together to form pills. Wrap in three layers of silk gauze, tie to a bamboo tube, insert approximately three to four cun into the vagina. Wait for the time it takes to burn one incense stick, and menstruation will commence.
Yili Xiandan (One Pill Immortal Elixir) treats dry blood consumption (chronic consumptive disease due to blood stasis) in women, as well as red and white leukorrhea. It is miraculous for promoting conception.
Croton Seed (one hundred twenty grains, shelled. Place wrapped beans on a new brick and pound to remove oil until clean like flour, then use) Mylabris (sixty grains, wings and feet removed, ground to powder) Pangolin Scale (five qian, fried in oil, ground to powder) Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit (one liang, scraped coarse skin, fire-pounded to powder) Lepidium Seed (ground to powder, one liang) Rhubarb (ground to powder, one liang)
Mix all ingredients. Boil dates, remove skin and pits, and form pills the size of quail eggs. Wrap each pill in an opened silkworm cocoon, thread onto a three-cun bamboo tube, leaving two to three cun of string at the tail end, twisted to prevent gas leakage. Before use, wash the vagina with warm water, clean and dry thoroughly. Moisten the tip of the pill with scallion juice, insert deeply into the uterus, leave for exactly one day and night, then remove and discard the pill. After using this pill, cold qi descends shortly thereafter, causing chills and fever resembling Taiyang syndrome (common cold); do not fear. Diet can be taken freely without harm. Menstruation will clear within half a day, expelling fresh blood, dead blood, and all foul matter. Avoid raw, cold, and stimulating foods. From then on, the uterus becomes warm, and pregnancy can occur upon intercourse.
For women who are physically weak and suffer from amenorrhea, this is due to exhaustion of blood vessels; tonification is appropriate, and menstruation will naturally resume.
Tongjing Tiaoqi Tang (Menstruation-Promoting Qi-Regulating Decoction) treats amenorrhea in women with weakness.
Angelica sinensis (washed with wine) Ligusticum chuanxiong Paeonia lactiflora (stir-fried with wine) Rehmannia glutinosa (soaked in wine) Cyperi Rhizoma (stir-fried with urine, each one liang) Moutan Cortex (eight qian)

Peach Kernel Safflower (add these two according to condition)
Cut the above into ten doses. Decoct in water. Take one dose on an empty stomach, and another before bed.

Angelica sinensis (washed with wine) Ligusticum chuanxiong Paeonia lactiflora (stir-fried with wine) Motherwort Cyperi Rhizoma (soaked in wine, vinegar, rice wash, and urine, then stir-fried) Prepared Rehmannia root (stir-fried with ginger juice) Cornus officinalis fruit (pitted) Poria cocos (peeled) Gardenia fruit (stir-fried) Fennel (stir-fried with wine) Citrus reticulata peel (equal parts)

A woman with inherently weak stomach qi cried for her mother, resulting in hemoptysis, cough, night sweats, fever, and cessation of menstruation for three months. I reasoned that grief injures the Lung and overthinking injures the Spleen. Thus, she took Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) (see Tonification section) with added Platycodon root, Fritillaria bulb, and Anemarrhena rhizome in the morning; and Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) (see Forgetfulness section) combined with Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) in the evening, resulting in recovery. (See Tonification section.)
A woman suffered from long-term malaria; menstruation ceased during attacks. She presented with physical weakness, large pulse, headache, reluctance to eat, loose stools, dribbling urination, dry mouth and cracked lips, internal heat, and abdominal distension. This was likely due to prolonged malaria depleting healthy qi, allowing ministerial fire to flare independently. Treatment with Buzhong Yiqi Tang led to quick recovery. However, intermittent headaches persisted, so Vitex fruit was added to stop the pain; subsequently, Liuwei Dihuang Wan was added to restore menstruation. (See Tonification section.)
The favored wife of Vice Minister Wei suffered from inverted menstruation with continuous hemoptysis. I palpated the six pulses as slightly choppy yet forceful, indicating blood deficiency with flourishing fire. I prescribed Siwu Tang (Four-Substance Decoction) removing Prepared Rehmannia, using Raw Rehmannia totaling one liang, plus one liang of Rhubarb steamed with wine, decocted together, administered with urine. After administration, bleeding stopped and menstruation resumed.
The favored wife of Vice Minister Xu suffered from amenorrhea. Others suspected pregnancy. By the seventh or eighth month, she gradually became sallow and thin, with drum-like masses on both sides of the abdomen, fever, flushed face, and loss of appetite.
I palpated the six pulses as slightly choppy, diagnosing blood exhaustion with qi depression. I prescribed Siwu Tang (Four-Substance Decoction) with additions of Cyperi Rhizoma, Moutan Cortex, and Atractylodes macrocephala for more than ten doses. Then, Peach Kernel and Safflower were added for several more doses. Finally, Four-Stir-Fried Aurantium Pills were given. Within three or four doses, numerous blood clots were expelled, and she recovered.
