According to *Chao Shi Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases of the Chao Family): Restlessness with inability to sleep is caused by Heart Heat; mere deficiency restlessness with inability to sleep is caused by Gallbladder Cold. "Deficiency restlessness" refers to a state of mental agitation and unrest in the chest and heart region.
**Jiawei Wendan Tang** (Modified Wendan Decoction) treats deficiency restlessness and inability to lie down after a major illness, as well as deficiency and timidity of the Heart and Gallbladder, easily startled by events, shortness of breath, palpitations, and fatigue.
Ingredients: Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, soaked seven times, 3.5 qian), Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, stir-fried with bran, each 1.5 qian), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 2.2 qian), Fuling (Poria), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, each 1.1 qian), Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, stir-fried), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix, dehearted), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, each 1 qian).
Crush these ingredients for one dose. Decoct with Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) and take orally.
**Zhuye Shigao Tang** (Lophatherum and Gypsum Decoction) treats cases after a major illness where both exterior and interior are deficient, internal fluids are depleted, resulting in irritability, thirst, mental restlessness, and various deficiency-type heat conditions resembling Shaoyang disease or Taiyang disease, but without aversion to cold or body pain. Sweating and purging methods are contraindicated; this decoction is appropriate (see the Treatise on Cold Damage for the formula details).
Forgetfulness, palpitations due to fright, Zhengchong (severe palpitations accompanied by fear), loss of willpower, insomnia, and Xin Feng (Wind affecting the Heart) all stem from phlegm-saliva flooding the Heart, leading to insufficiency of Heart Qi. If cooling agents are used excessively, Heart Fire becomes weaker, phlegm-saliva increases, and the disease deepens. It is appropriate to regulate Phlegm-Qi.
**Gaozhen Wuyou San** (High Pillow Without Worries Powder) treats deficiency and timidity of the Heart and Gallbladder, with inability to sleep day or night.
Ingredients: Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, processed with ginger juice), Baifuling (Poria, peeled), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, stir-fried with bran), Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, dehearted), Longyanrou (Longan Aril), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, each 1.5 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 5 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1.5 qian).
Crush these ingredients for one dose. Decoct with water and take orally.
**Suanzaoren Tang** (Sour Jujube Seed Decoction) treats hypersomnia and insomnia.
Ingredients: Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, stir-fried slightly with skin), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, removed rhizome), Baifuling (Poria, peeled, equal parts).
Crush these ingredients for one dose. Decoct with water. If one does not wish to sleep, take it hot; if one wishes to sleep, take it cold.
Insomnia due to Gallbladder Deficiency is a Cold syndrome. Use stir-fried Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), grind into powder, and take mixed with Zhu Ye (Phyllostachys nigra leaf) decoction. Hypersomnia due to Gallbladder Excess is a Heat syndrome. Use raw Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), grind into powder, and take mixed with tea and Jiangzhi (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens juice).
A fifteen-year-old boy, due to excessive mental exertion, suffered from little sleep, palpitations due to fright, Zhengchong (severe palpitations), and aversion to cold. Initially, **Buzhong Yiqi Tang** (Tonify the Middle and Augment Qi Decoction) was used with Fuling (Poria), Suanzao (Sour Jujube Seed), and Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), and the aversion to cold gradually ceased. Then, **Jiawei Guipi Tang** (Modified Guipi Decoction) was used, and the palpitations due to fright subsided. Finally, he recovered after taking **Yangxin Tang** (Nourish Heart Decoction).
