Pulse: Alternating between slow and rapid, large and small, or surging (Cu) or knotted (Jie), these are all pulses of evil spirits; a pulse that is tight and rapid indicates Dunshi (Escaping Corpse).
Danxi stated: What the common people call "Chong'e" (Clashing with Evil) refers to illness caused by being clashed against by evil ghosts and malevolent influences. Such patients invariably suffer from this because their Qi and Blood were deficient beforehand. Qi and Blood are the essence of the Heart's Spirit (Shen). If the Spirit has already declined and become depleted, it is plausible that evil pathogens enter thereby. However, upon inspection, this likely refers to the influence of mountain foxes or demons. If both Qi and Blood are deficient, and phlegm stagnates in the chest and heart, obstructing the ascending and descending mechanisms and preventing normal circulation, causing the Twelve Officials (Zang-Fu organs) to lose their respective functions, resulting in vision, hearing, speech, and movement becoming delusional and false, then treating it as an evil possession will certainly lead to death. Can one not be cautious?
Qin Chengzu's Moxibustion Method for Ghosts: Treats all conditions such as fright, mania, delirious speech, climbing over walls, scaling roofs, cursing without distinguishing between relatives and strangers. Tie the patient's two thumbs firmly with thin hemp rope. Place large moxa cones on the four points: the two nail angles and the fleshy areas at the corners of the two fingers. Ignite fire at all four locations. If any location does not catch fire, it is ineffective. Moxa seven Zhuang (units of moxibustion); miraculous effect.
Bixie Dan (Evil-Repelling Pill): Treats illnesses caused by clashing with evil spirits and strange diseases, as well as afflictions by nine-tailed fox spirits in mountain valleys.
Ingredients: Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix), Gui Jian (Ardisiae Caulifloris Fructus), Jiu Jie Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 1 liang), Tao Nu (Unfallen Peach Fruit, harvested in December, dried, 5 qian), Xiong Huang (Realgar, ground separately), Chen Sha (Cinnabar, ground separately) (each 3 qian), Niu Huang (Calculus Bovis, ground separately) (1 qian), Jin Bo (Gold Leaf) (20 pieces), optionally add She Xiang (Moschus) (1 qian).
Grind all the above herbs except Tao Nu into fine powder. Mix evenly with the powders of Realgar, Cinnabar, and Calculus Bovis. Use wine to mix rice flour paste to form pills, sized like longan fruits, coated with gold leaf. At bedtime, dissolve one pill in Mu Xiang Tang (Machuel Decoction) and take orally; various evils will dare not approach the body. Furthermore, place five to seven pills in a crimson gauze pouch and hang them in the bed canopy, which is especially excellent.
Some patients, at the onset of illness, speak deliriously or go mad, with no pulse detectable in the six positions (Cun, Guan, Chi on both hands). However, when palpating below the thumb and above the Cun Kou (Radial Pulse), there is indeed a pulsating artery. This is called "Ghost Pulse," caused by evil spirits. Medication is unnecessary; only talismans and spells should be used, or following custom to send away gods and ghosts is also acceptable.
