When the Liver is affected by Cold, the Renying pulse and the left Guan position pulse are tight and wiry. If the Liver is deficient and affected by Cold, it is due to the mutual influence of the Mother-Child relationship; a wiry-dominant pulse indicates a favorable prognosis. However, if there is only a tight pulse without wiriness, accompanied by tongue retraction and testicular contraction, the prognosis is unfavorable. Thus, the pulse in the Liver's own position should be as tight as a cut rope. The manifestations of Cold affecting the Liver include: the patient feels chilly aversion to cold, slight fever, a flushed face as if steamed, apparent sweating, irritability and heat in the chest, spasm and urgency in the hypochondrium, and inability to extend the legs.
When the Heart is affected by Cold, the Renying pulse and the left Cun Kou position pulse are tight and surging. If the Heart is deficient and affected by Cold, it is due to the clashing of the Zai (Thief) pathogen; the pulse reflects in its own position, where a surging and slippery pulse indicates a favorable prognosis. However, if there is only a tight pulse, accompanied by a dry and scorched tongue, the prognosis is unfavorable. The manifestations of Cold affecting the Heart include: the patient feels as if chewing chopped leeks; in severe cases, heart pain radiates to the back, and back pain radiates to the heart, resembling Gu Zhu disease (a parasitic or toxic condition), with aversion to cold, cold extremities, spontaneous vomiting, recurrence after a short interval, ceaseless episodes of remission and exacerbation, stupor, obstruction of consciousness, and loss of awareness.
When the Spleen is affected by Cold, the Renying pulse and the right Guan position pulse are tight, deep, and fine. If the Spleen is deficient and affected by Cold, the Cold pathogen takes advantage of the deficiency to attack; the pulse reflects in its own position, where a long pulse indicates a favorable prognosis. However, if there is a deep and tight pulse, accompanied by everted lips (Chun Jie), the prognosis is unfavorable. The manifestations of Cold affecting the Spleen include: distension of the heart and abdomen, spasm and urgency of the four limbs, failure of belching and sighing, lack of transmission of Zang Qi, either constipation or diarrhea.
When the Lung is affected by Cold, the Renying pulse and the right Cun Kou position pulse are tight and choppy. If the Lung is deficient and affected by Cold, it is due to the mutual induction of the Mother-Child relationship; the pulse reflects in its own position, where a floating pulse indicates a favorable prognosis. However, if there is a tight and choppy pulse, accompanied by dry nose, the prognosis is unfavorable. The manifestations of Cold affecting the Lung include: frequent expectoration of turbid saliva, shortness of breath with inability to complete inhalation, chilly aversion to cold, and coughing upon inhalation.
When the Kidney is affected by Cold, the Renying pulse and the left Chi position pulse are deep, tight, and slippery. If the Kidney is deficient and affected by Cold, Cold tends to invade the Kidney, following similar categories; the pulse reflects in its own position, where a deep and slippery pulse indicates a favorable prognosis. However, if there is a tight and choppy pulse, accompanied by black earlobes and impaired eye movement (Mu Jing [Dong]), the prognosis is unfavorable. The manifestations of Cold affecting the Kidney include: dark complexion, weak Qi, shallow breathing, deafness, lower back pain, coldness below the knees, limb spasm and pain, stupor, and loss of consciousness. For other cases, refer to the Shang Han Men section.
This formula treats Cold affecting the Five Zang organs, trismus (lockjaw), rigidity of the four limbs, aphonia, and inability to speak. In the past, a warrior guarding the border went out of his tent to observe during heavy snow and suddenly fainted. Lin Ji, serving as the accompanying medical officer at that time, administered two doses of this medicine, after which he regained consciousness.
