Wu Yun Liu Qi (Five Movements and Six Qi) refers to the normal laws of movement, circulation, ascending, and descending of Yin and Yang in Heaven and Earth. The circulation of Wu Yun exhibits differences in excess (Tai Guo) and deficiency (Bu Ji); the ascending and descending of Liu Qi presents deviations in compliance or rebellion (Ni Cong), dominance (Sheng), and retaliation (Fu). Anything that does not conform to virtue, transformation, governance, and order is termed a variation or disaster (Bian Sheng), all of which can cause disease. Thus, the *Classic* states: "The six channels are turbulent, the five qi shift and move." Excess and deficiency, dominance and amalgamation occur. Regarding therapeutic transformation, humans respond to it; if variations and disasters are encountered, disasters arise. Due to stagnation and eruption, one's true constancy is disturbed; lacking virtue leads to destruction and retaliation. Depending on the deficiency or excess of the internal Zang organ qi, diseases manifest, which are referred to as "Shi Qi" (Seasonal Pathogenic Qi). This is clearly different from common colds or injuries caused by weather, nor is it the same as epidemic diseases spreading through the air. Ancient sages understood that the excessive, deficient, conflicting, and aberrant Qi of Heaven and Earth could be balanced and treated using the flavors generated by Heaven and Earth that possess virtue. The classic theories are clear and evident, yet few people pay attention to them. Fearing they might be lost, I have narrated and recorded them.
Whenever encountering a year corresponding to Ren (Water stem) in the sexagenary cycle, known as the "Ji Fa" (Initiating Generation) phase, the Wood Movement is in excess. Wind Qi circulates widely, and the Spleen Earth is affected by pathogenic factors. The populace suffers from Sund Xie (diarrhea with undigested food), reduced appetite, heavy body, mental vexation and grievance, borborygmus (intestinal rumbling), and fullness/stiffness in the hypochondrium. In severe cases, there is irritability, sudden anger, dizziness, vertigo, and even manic-depressive disorders. If retaliated against by Metal Qi, there may be contrary hypochondriac pain and vomiting. If the Chong Yang pulse becomes imperceptible, death ensues.
This formula treats the Spleen and Stomach affected by Wind, presenting with Sund Xie and profuse diarrhea, borborygmus, abdominal fullness, heaviness and stagnation in the four limbs, irritability, dizziness, vertigo, or unilateral pain in the left hypochondrium. Ingredients include: Bai Fu Ling (Poria), Nong Po (Magnolia Bark processed with ginger juice), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Qing Pi (Citrus Unshiu Peel), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger processed), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber washed with water decoction), Cao Guo (Tsaoko Cardamom Fruit peeled), and Gan Cao (Licorice Root honey-fried). All ingredients are used in equal proportions. Grind into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose, with 1.5 cups of water, 3 slices of fresh ginger, and 2 jujubes. Decoct until reduced to 0.7 parts, strain, and take before meals.
Whenever encountering a year corresponding to Wu (Earth stem) in the sexagenary cycle, known as the "He Xi" (Blazing Heat) phase, the Fire Movement is in excess. Blazing heat circulates widely, and the Lung Metal is affected by pathogenic factors. The populace suffers from malaria, shortness of breath, coughing, and wheezing; hematemesis or epistaxis (blood overflow); diarrhea; dry throat and deafness; internal heat; severe heat in the shoulder and back; chest pain; fullness/stiffness in the hypochondrium; pain in the back, thighs, and both arms; feverish body and bone pain, leading to spreading sores (Jin Yin). If retaliated against by Water Qi, there may be contrary delirium, mania, and restlessness; coughing, wheezing, and asthma; continuous blood overflow and diarrhea. If the Tai Yuan pulse becomes imperceptible, death ensues.
