The ascending and descending of Yin and Yang Qi, whether in the Heaven (upper) or on the Earth (lower), have their fixed positions, and left and right have their regulations. The response of geography to the celestial phenomena differs in root and branch; the resonance of Qi manifests different images. Changes in compliance or opposition give rise to diseases. Both excess and deficiency can cause illness. What the world calls "Seasonal Qi" (Shi Qi) is all caused by the movement of Heavenly Qi. Now, we first discuss the Local Primary Qi (Ben Qi, the constant seasonal climate pattern), and then superimpose the Heavenly Six Qi (Ke Qi, the variable annual climate factors) as the branch. With winning and retaliating Qi, treating according to the nature of the Qi will reveal the source of all diseases.
From after Great Cold until Spring Equinox, Jueyin Wind-Wood is the First Primary Qi. From Spring Equinox until Grain Full, Shaoyin Ministerial Fire is the Second Primary Qi. From Grain Full until Great Heat, Shaoyang Ministerial Fire is the Third Primary Qi. From Great Heat until Autumn Equinox, Taiyin Damp-Earth is the Fourth Primary Qi. From Autumn Equinox until Light Snow, Yangming Dry-Metal is the Fifth Primary Qi. From Light Snow until Great Cold, Taiyang Cold-Water is the Sixth Primary Qi.
Each Primary Qi governs for 60 days and 87.5 ke, known as the Ben Qi (Primary/Local Qi). Subsequently, the Heavenly Six Qi (Ke Qi) are superimposed to rule. Observing their compliance or opposition, one uses herbs to harmonize, ensuring that upper and lower coordinate without violating order. This is the guideline of Heaven and Earth, the origin of changes, which must be deeply understood.
In years of Chen and Xu, Taiyang Cold-Water rules as the Si Tian (Ruling Qi of Heaven), and Taiyin Damp-Earth resides as the Zai Quan (Ruling Qi of Earth). The Qi transformation operates prior to the natural sequence. In the First Qi phase, Shaoyang Ministerial Fire is superimposed upon Jueyin Wind-Wood. The people suffer from epidemics, fever, headache, vomiting, and sores/ulcers on the skin and muscles. In the Second Qi phase, Yangming Dry-Metal is superimposed upon Shaoyin Ministerial Fire. The people suffer from Qi stagnation and abdominal fullness. In the Third Qi phase, Taiyang Cold-Water is superimposed upon Shaoyang Ministerial Fire. The people suffer from cold, yet internal heat arises; they develop carbuncles, ulcers, and dysentery, with heart heat and mental confusion/oppression. In the Fourth Qi phase, Jueyin Wind-Wood is superimposed upon Taiyin Damp-Earth. Wind and Damp compete. The people suffer from high fever, shortness of breath, muscle atrophy, flaccidity of the legs, and dysentery with red and white discharge. In the Fifth Qi phase, Shaoyin Ministerial Fire is superimposed upon Yangming Dry-Metal. The Qi of the people becomes relaxed and comfortable. In the Final Qi phase, Taiyin Damp-Earth is superimposed upon Taiyang Cold-Water. The people feel desolate and cold, leading to death. The treatment method: use Sweet-Warm herbs to level Water Qi, and Sour-Bitter herbs to tonify Fire Qi. Suppress the dominant Luck Qi, and support the Qi that is unable to overcome it.
