**Renjin Wan (Honeysuckle Pill)**
*Renjin Cao* (Jasminis Officinalis Caulis et Flos, amount unspecified; roots, stems, flowers, and leaves are all usable. It is also known as Laowengxu [Old Man's Beard], Mizhuohua [Honey-Sipping Flower], or Jinyinhua [Gold and Silver Flower]. Wash clean before use.)
The above herb is soaked in rice koji wine within a bottle, simmered over chaff fire overnight, taken out, dried, mixed with a small amount of Gancao [Licorice Root] powder, and formed into pills using the soaking wine as a paste binder, sized like wu zi (Cocculus orbiculatus seeds). Take 50 to 100 pills per dose, washed down with wine at any time. This medicine not only treats carbuncles but also relieves thirst, and is effective for five types of hemorrhoids and various fistulas.
**For treating various thirst syndromes:**
Maimendong [Ophiopogonis Radix] (heart removed), Renshen [Ginseng Radix], Huangqin [Scutellariae Radix] (each 2 liang), Baifuling [Poria], Shanzhuyu [Corni Fructus], Shanyao [Dioscoreae Rhizoma], Guixin [Cinnamomi Cortex] (each 1.5 liang), Heidou [Sojae Semen Nigrum] (3 he, boiled, skin removed, separately ground).
Grind the above into powder. Boil Di Huang Ziran Zhi [Fresh Juice of Rehmanniae Radix] (two bowls) and Niuru [Cow Milk] (two cups) into an ointment/paste. Form into pills sized like wu zi. Take 50 pills washed down with Da Mai decoction [Barley Decoction].
**For treating Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst):**
Wulingzhi [Trogopterori Faeces] (0.5 liang), Heidou [Sojae Semen Nigrum] (0.5 liang, raw, skin removed).
Grind the above into powder. Decoct Donggua Zi [Benincasae Semen] soup, mix with 2 qian of the powder, and take orally.
**For treating San Xiao (Three Wasting-Thirstes) with divine efficacy:**
Muli Fen [Concha Ostreae Powder], Kushen [Sophorae Flavescentis Radix], Mituoseng [Lithargyri Pulvis], Zhimu [Anemarrhenae Rhizoma], Shuiyin [Hydrargyrum] (combined with Baila [White Beeswax] 0.5 fen to form cinnabar-like grains; each of the other five herbs 1 liang), Gualougen [Trichosanthis Radix] (1.5 liang), Huangdan [Minii Oxidum Rubrum] (1 liang, ground together with the hydrargyrum grain).
Grind the above into powder. For men, use one female pig stomach; for women, use one male pig stomach. Place the medicine inside, sew it shut with thread, and tie it to a new brick. Separately, chop 0.5 jin of fresh Gualougen [Trichosanthis Radix] and boil it together. From morning until noon, remove the medicine, discard the Gualougen, and only grind the pig stomach thoroughly, mixing it with the medicine to form pills sized like wu zi. Take 30 pills per dose, washed down with Mi Tang [Rice Decoction] before meals, three times a day. The root of the disease can be eliminated in ten days.
It is said: Thirst without external causes... In Taiyang disease [Taiyang Syndrome], pulse floating with thirst belongs to Taiyang; sweating with thirst belongs to Yangming; spontaneous diarrhea with thirst belongs to Shaoyin. In Yangdu Shanghan [Yang-Toxin Cold Damage], when dryness and heat are extremely severe causing intense thirst, or in cases of summerheat with latent heat where repeated treatments fail to cure the thirst, or in cases of miasma/toxic qi infection with alternating cold and heat causing thirst, are these not external causes? The treatment methods follow those in *Shanghan Lun* [Treatise on Cold Damage Disorders], so they are not cited here in detail. Jiuzhu Huanglian Wan [Alcohol-Boiled Coptis Pill] is most excellent for treating summerheat-heat thirst. Furthermore, there is "Blood Thirst" in women who suffer from excessive blood loss during childbirth; this does not belong to the category of San Xiao and must be carefully distinguished.
