Apart from the five types of jaundice, there are jaundices caused by epidemic pathogens, miasmic malaria, and pathogenic factors such as wind, cold, summerheat, and dampness, which differ in presentation.
For treating acute yellow jaundice in epidemic diseases, as well as miasmic malaria and pestilential diseases:
Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, remove skin and tips), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, remove skin and tips, stir-fry, each 3 fen), Douchi (Fermented Sojae Semen, 2.5 fen, soak in decoction until soft, grind separately), Changshan (Dichroae Radix), Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, vinegar-fried, each 0.5 liang), Badou (Crotonis Fructus, remove skin, press to remove oil, 1 fen), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, steamed, 1 liang 1 fen).
Grind the above into powder, mix with maltose syrup to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take three pills per dose with warm water; vomiting or diarrhea indicates efficacy. If ineffective, increase by one pill. If any abnormal sensation is felt in the body, take it immediately for wonderful results.
For treating wind jaundice caused by unresolved stasis-heat following wind injury, characterized by generalized yellowing of the body, urine that is either yellow or white, alternating chills and fever, lethargy, aversion to movement, with a pulse that is floating on the cun position and weak on the chi position:
Sheng Ai (Mugwort leaf juice collected in March, pounded and boiled in a copper vessel until paste-like), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, steamed), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, stir-fried), Gualualgen (Trichosanthis Radix), Ningshuishi (Pond Water Stone), Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix), Tingli (Descurainiae Semen seu Lepidii Semen, stir-fry between paper layers, equal parts).
Grind the above into powder, mix adequately with mugwort paste to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Initially take six or seven pills, gradually increasing to twenty pills. If fever is present, add Kushen; if thirsty, add Gualualgen; if urination is difficult, add Tingli; if urination is frequent, add Ningshuishi; if urine is white, add Huanglian; if defecation is difficult, add Dahuang. The added herbs should be doubled in quantity.
Wuling San (Five-Ling Powder): Treats jaundice due to latent summerheat stagnation, with difficulty in urination, irritability, and thirst. Administer using Yinchen decoction to wash down the pills. (See the section on Summerheat Injury for the formula.)
For treating damp jaundice: At onset, there is whole-body pain, fever, and a dark-yellow complexion. After seven or eight days, high fever occurs, heat resides internally, and blood resembling liver tissue is passed. If the lower abdomen is full, urgent purgation is required. The body and eyes become entirely yellow, urination is difficult, and the pulse is deep and fine.
Fanshi (Alumen), Huashi (Talcum) (equal parts).
Grind the above into powder. Take two large qian per dose, mixed with barley porridge drink, three times daily before meals. Efficacy is indicated by the passage of bloody stools or recovery through sweating.
