The patient experiences alternating chills and fever, damaging the Lung Qi and vital energy, with sudden cough, vomiting, and regurgitation, or body heat with macular eruptions, wheezing, and coughing that draws in breath. This is named Baiqi li. The origin stems from the three months of autumn, where the source moves from the Yangming channel to involve the Hand-Taiyin channel, contracting epidemic pathogenic qi. If the Fu organs are deficient and injured by Yin pathogens, there are alternating chills and fever; if the Zang organs are excess and injured by Yang toxins, there is body heat with macular eruptions.

The patient has internal heat and external cold, desires to stay near fire, yet paradoxically desires to drink. There is severe lower back pain as if breaking, or cutting pain in the chest and hypochondrium like knife stabs, making movement impossible. There is intense heat sensation. If too many cold medicines are taken, it leads to profuse watery diarrhea. This disease is named Heigu wen. The origin stems from the three months of winter, where the Foot-Taiyang and Shaoyin channels contend, leading to accumulation and obstruction. If the Fu organs are deficient and injured by Yin toxins, there is internal heat and external cold; if the Zang organs are excess and damaged by Yang toxins, there is intense, surging heat.
