Treats Du Jing Chuang (severe genital ulceration) with dripping pus, foul odor, and rotting tissue.
Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Dendranthemi Flos (Kundonghua) (equal parts)
Grind the above into powder. Wash the affected area with a decoction of Cortex Lycii Radicis (Digupi) and Cnidii Fructus (Shechuangzi), dry with a soft cloth, and apply the medicine mixed with saliva to the lesion. It is strictly forbidden to wash with raw water; this applies to all sores.
Treats Yin Shi Chuang (genital erosion/ulceration).
Polygoni Orientalis Semen (Puhuang) (3 liang), Hydrargyrum (Shuiyin) (1 liang)
Grind evenly. First, soak and wash with pork broth, dry, and sprinkle the powder on the lesion. Another method: for male or female genital ulcers, apply Sulfur (Liuhuang) powder.
The "Li Feng" (Leprosy/Mal de Albers) mentioned in the *Classic* refers to what is called "Da Feng E Ji Lai" (severe wind disease, leprosy) in formula discussions. Although named "wind," it is not necessarily caused by external wind pathogens. Generally, it is mostly due to excessive desires and labor damaging Qi and Blood, causing internal heat to flare up and sweat to leak, while failing to avoid pathogenic wind, cold, and dampness. This allows licentious qi to interfere with Wei Qi (Defensive Qi), causing muscles to swell and bulge. When Qi stagnates, muscles lose sensation; when Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi) becomes turbid and stagnant, heat fails to circulate smoothly, leading to discolored complexion, skin ulceration, and collapse of the nasal bridge. The *Qian Jin Fang* states that this results from one's own unrighteous and vile deeds; although there may be words of repentance, there is no heart of true change, which truly reflects the situation. However, some cases are contagious and not self-inflicted, resulting from carelessness. The transmission of Qi and Blood—is this merely the result of past karma? Investigating the cause, these conditions arise from a combination of non-internal/non-external factors and external pathogens. The manifestations are diverse, as detailed later.
In treating Da Feng, one must deduce the cause. Whether caused by wind-cold-damp-heat, overwork/labor, diet, or contagion, they must not be treated indiscriminately. Dispersing cold-damp and wind-damp, clearing heat, and harmonizing Qi and Blood are distinct treatments. If one universally uses purgative wind medicines, the key to treatment will be missed. I once saw a monk suffering from a disease resembling Bai Lai (white leprosy/vitiligo), who suddenly did not develop sores but shed about one sheng of white skin daily upon waking, like snake shedding. The physician attributed it to excessive consumption of roasted and fried foods and cured him with three or four doses of Jie Du Xiong Huang Wan (Detoxifying Realgar Pill) from the *Ju Fang*. Was this not treating according to the cause?
Ephedrae Radix et Rhizoma (Mahuang Gen), Cortex Lycii Radicis (Digupi), Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix (Caowutou) (each 2 liang)
Crush the above into coarse powder and mix evenly with Natrii Sulfas (Puxiao) 2 liang. For each dose using 2 liang of the powder, add one bucket of water, one he of Zanthoxyli Fructus (Huajiao), thirty stems of Allii Cepae (Congbai), and one liang of Artemisiae Argyi Folium (Aiyeye). Boil together for ten boils, add one zhong zhan of Oryzae Fructus Acetum (Rimi Cu), mix well, strain, and sit in a warm room. Place towels over the limbs initially. When the water temperature is suitable, bathe until sweat permeates the face like flowing beads. Then sit in the room or sleep for a short while, which is even better. Only dress after the sweat has subsided, avoid wind, and go out. Bathe again after five days. After two such baths, take Huan Gu Dan (Bone-Replacing Pill).
