Whenever the tongue is swollen, there must be "Jin Chong" (a pathological entity resembling a worm) under the tongue, shaped like a mole cricket or a silkworm lying down, with a head and tail; the head is white. It can be cauterized with a red-hot iron rod applied to its head, which will cause it to disappear.
To treat sudden swelling and rupture of the tongue.
Fu Di Mei (Carbon from the bottom of a cooking pot, ground into fine powder).
Mix the above with vinegar and apply to the upper and lower surfaces of the tongue; reapply after the medication falls off. It is even better if bleeding is induced first before application. Another method uses equal parts of salt and Fu Di Mei mixed together.
To treat heat obstruction causing a white coating on the tongue, dryness and roughness, and unclear speech.
Bohe Ziran Zhi (Fresh juice of Mint Herb) and Baimi (White Honey) in equal proportions.
First, wipe and clean the affected area with a slice of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Root) dipped in water, then apply the medication for good efficacy.
To treat heat accumulation causing bleeding from the tongue surface like a spring.
Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis, washed), Bai Jiaoxiang (Boswelliae Resina), and Muli Fen (Ostreae Concha Powder) in equal proportions.
Grind the above into powder. Use a small amount to sprinkle on the lesion, or heat an iron rod until red-hot and cauterize the bleeding pore.
To treat wind-damp-cold causing tongue stiffness and inability to speak.
Kufan (Alumen Calcined) and Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart) in equal proportions.
Grind the above into powder. Place one qian of the powder under the tongue each time, or treat with Zhengshe San (see Stroke Section for formula).
If the Jiache acupoint is dislocated due to yawning, resulting in an open mouth that cannot close, administer wine to induce deep drunkenness. While the patient sleeps, blow medication into the nose to induce sneezing; upon sneezing, the jaw will automatically realign.
The Hou (throat/pharynx) functions to monitor qi, while the Yan (gullet/oesophagus) functions to swallow food; the Yan connects to the three epigastria to communicate with the Stomach, and the Hou connects to the five zang organs to link with the Lungs. The pathways for qi and grain are distinct, clear and understandable. Those who propose theories of "Water Hou" and "Grain Hou" are presenting erroneous views. *Qianjin Fang* further states: "Hou monitors Spleen and Stomach, Yan gate monitors Liver and Gallbladder." This is also not the ultimate truth. Wise individuals should deduce based on reason and not forcibly retain such personal fallacies. When various zang organs are hot, they swell; when cold, they contract; both conditions cause Hou Bi (throat closure), as does wind-dryness. Prolonged coughing from the five zang organs leads to hoarseness; hoarseness indicates damage to the Hou, not a disease of the Yan gate. If the Yan swells, swallowing is impossible; if it dries, swallowing is difficult. This is often caused by consuming spicy and hot foods or repeated vomiting causing thermal injury, leading to dryness of the Yan system, which is distinct from the Hou gate. There is also Xuan Yong (suspended abscess) sudden swelling that blocks the throat, similar to Hou Bi. However, Xuan Yong is located superiorly, commonly known as Ying Weng, or also called E Ju. These are phonetic errors in colloquial language and must be recorded carefully for identification.
Xiao Xuming Tang (Minor Continuation of Life Decoction) treats sudden Hou Bi (throat obstruction) with inability to speak. (Formula see Stroke Section).
Add seven Ren (Apricot Seed, peeled and tip removed) and decoct; this is very effective.
