Due to differences in the innate constitution of the Zang-Fu organs, and improper regulation, the body may tend towards either cold or heat. Therefore, in discussions on prescriptions, there is the concept of "Stubborn Cold" (Gu Leng) and "Accumulated Heat" (Ji Re). "Stubborn Cold" refers to Cold Strike (Zhong Han). It often occurs when the True Qi (Zhen Qi) is already weak and the Stomach Qi (Wei Qi) is not solid, compounded by consuming raw, cold, or icy foods. This leads to deficiency-cold in the intestines and stomach. Yin stagnates and coagulates, while Yang cannot function normally, resulting in watery diarrhea, frequent urination, clear nasal discharge, vomiting of saliva and froth, undigested food in stool, and shivering chills. These are all manifestations of Yang deficiency and Yin excess. "Accumulated Heat" refers to dryness-heat in the Zang-Fu organs. It often arises from depletion of Essence and Blood, with vexation and obstruction in the San Jiao (Triple Burner), compounded by taking mineral elixirs (Dan Shi) or wine-fried/roasted foods. This causes toxic heat accumulation in the intestines and stomach. Yang becomes blazingly excessive, unable to be controlled by Yin, leading to constipation with difficulty, dark and painful urination, bitter taste in the mouth, dry throat, thick saliva, excessive eye discharge, and uncontrolled eating habits. These are all manifestations of Yin deficiency and Yang excess. Each condition has its specific treatment formula.
(Efficacy of Jin Ye Dan): Consolidates True Qi, warms the Dantian, strengthens bones and sinews, boosts Yang energy, eliminates chronic stubborn cold, and tonifies劳伤 (labor injury) and deficiency. It treats chronic coldness of the kidneys and lower back in men, accumulations and masses in the heart and abdomen, cold masses under the hypochondrium, various intestinal parasites, spermatorrhea and enuresis, emaciation and weakness, pain in the feet and knees, stubborn bi-syndrome caused by cold wind, rebellious Qi, epistaxis, cough with asthma alternating with aversion to cold and fever, cholera with muscle cramps, and deficiency-type loose stools. It also treats hemorrhoids, wet sores, continuous bleeding from the anus; as well as blood stasis with alternating cold and fever in women, and erosive ulcers of the vagina.
Sulfur (Shi Huang) (Ten jin [approx. 5kg], first refined and smelted, sand and gravel removed, weighed, ground into powder, stored in a porcelain jar. Seal the lid with a paste made of water and Chishizhi [Red Stone Lip]. Reinforce the seal with salt mud, dry it. Bury a small pot filled with water in the ground. Place the sealed sulfur jar on top of the buried pot. Seal tightly with mud. Roast slowly over low fire for seven days and nights. After the time is up, slightly increase the heat. Remove after cooling.)
Grind the above into a fine powder. For every liang [approx. 30g] of powder, use one liang of cooked dough (Chui Bing). Soak the dough in hot water, squeeze out excess moisture, and mix with the powder to form pills the size of a Chinese quince seed (Wu Zi Da). Take thirty pills per dose, up to one hundred pills, swallowed with warm rice broth, taken on an empty stomach. It also treats Yin syndrome of Shang Han (Cold Damage), characterized by cold body, faint pulse, cold limbs, vomiting or diarrhea, incessant spontaneous sweating, or urinary incontinence. The number of pills is not restricted; take them together until the body becomes warm and the pulse becomes palpable.
