Cinnabar (1 fen, ground), Nifen (Calomel), Moschus (each 0.5 qian), Aloe, Baifuzi (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Rhizoma), Glycyrrhiza (each 2 qian), Picrorhizae Rhizoma (1 qian), Scorpio (7 pieces), Bombyx Batryticatus (10 pieces), Folium Aurum (7 leaves), Euphorbiae Polyphyliae Rhizoma (one piece, roasted).
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. For children over two years old, administer half a "fu bi" (a small measuring spoon) dose, mixed with Yinjin Bohe Tang (Silver and Gold Mint Decoction); for children over three years old, administer 1 qian. If the child's mouth is closed, instill the medicine into the nose.
Heifuzi (Raw Aconitum carmichaelii, peeled and navel removed), Sheng Tiannanxing (Raw Arisaematis Rhizoma), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (each 2 qian), Baifuzi (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Rhizoma) (1.5 qian).
Grind the above ingredients finely, soak in Jinghua Shui (well water drawn from the first bucketful) for seven days, changing the water daily. After soaking, drain well, add 2 qian of Cinnabar and 1 qian of Moschus, and mix evenly. Administer one "zi" (a very small measure) per dose, mixed with Bohe Tang (Mint Decoction), adjusting the dosage according to the child's condition. Another prescription: Use raw Heifuzi (peeled and navel removed), grind into powder, administer 2 qian per dose. Add 1.5 zhan of water and 2 slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), decoct together until half a zhan remains, divide into two or three doses, adjusting according to the child's condition. If vomiting occurs, add 5 Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos) and decoct together; administer when the breast is empty. Alternatively, soak Chuibing (steamed wheat cake) in water, form pills the size of millet grains, and administer 20 pills per dose. See the Epilepsy section for other prescriptions.
To treat Jielu (delayed closure of fontanelles), where the infant's skull bones fail to fuse as they should and remain separated.
Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex) (each 0.5 liang), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (7.5 qian).
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Mix with Ru Zhi (breast milk) and apply to the skull. Reapply when dry. The condition resolves when the child's face becomes ruddy.
Shetui (Ophiopogonis Dermis, fried until charred and ground).
Mix the above with Zhu Jiache Zhong Sui (marrow from the pig's jawbone) and apply to the top of the head, three to four times daily. It has been reported that wrapping the head with a headscarf for protection allows it to heal naturally over time, which is also an effective method.
The *Qianjin Fang* discusses Hanbing (disease caused by a demon) in infants, stating that this occurs when an evil spirit enters the mother's womb during pregnancy, causing illness in the fetus. Han is also considered a type of minor demon. Its symptoms include slight diarrhea, alternating chills and fever, and brittle, lusterless hair and eyebrows. Longdan Tang (Gentian Decoction) is appropriate. If a woman who already has a toddler (unable to walk independently) becomes pregnant again, and the older child nurses from the newborn, the older child may also develop Hanbing. This results in jaundice, emaciation, prominent bones, fever, and hair loss.
