Floating (Fu), Deep (Chen), Slow (Chi), and Rapid (Shu) are the outlines of pulse diagnosis; both *Suwen* (Plain Questions) and *Maijing* (Pulse Classic) regard them as standard pulses. *Maijue* (Pulse Rhymes) established the categories of Seven Superficial (Qi Biao), Eight Interior (Ba Li), and Nine Unusual (Jiu Dao), yet omitted the Rapid pulse, making its unorthodoxy self-evident without further analysis. However, since its format has changed from ancient times, to clarify its errors, its meaning should be analyzed in the present day to find a compromise. Before the heaven and earth were created, Old Yin (Lao Yin) and Old Yang (Lao Yang) were in charge; after heaven and earth were created, Young Yin (Shao Yin) and Young Yang (Shao Yang) came into power. The number of Young Yang is seven; seven governs Heaven, which has seven luminaries (Sun, Moon, and five planets), situated on the surface of Earth. The number of Young Yin is eight; eight governs Earth, which has eight extremes (as stated in *Huainanzi*: "Beyond the Nine Provinces lie eight Yins; beyond eight Yins lie eight Yan; beyond eight Yans lie eight Ji."). These are situated within Heaven. Yang is often in excess, while Yin is often insufficient (Heaven envelops Earth; males are stronger than females; sires are vigorous compared to dams, and roosters are assertive compared to hens). The classic states: "If one can understand the seven losses and eight gains, one is sufficient to treat diseases." This refers to this principle. The numbers of heaven and earth begin with one and end with nine. Thus, Heaven has names for Nine Heavens (Jiu Tian), Nine Stars (Jiu Xing), and Nine Paths (Jiu Dao). (The Nine Stars refer to: Tan Lang, Ju Men, Lu Cun, Wen Qu, Lian Zhen, Wu Qu, Po Jun, Zuo Fu, and You Bi. The Nine Paths refer to: two Green Paths, two White Paths, two Red Paths, two Black Paths, combined with one Yellow Path to make nine. Regarding Nine Heavens, *Zhouzi* states: One is Zong Dong Tian, Two is Heng Tian, and the following seven luminaries each occupy one layer of heaven. Additionally, *Taiyuan Jing* states: One Zhong Tian, Two Xian Tian, Three Cong Tian, Four Geng Tian, Five Cui Tian, Six Kuo Tian, Seven Jian Tian, Eight Shen Tian, Nine Cheng Tian). Earth has titles for Nine Provinces (Jiu Zhou), Nine Fields (Jiu Ye), and Nine Rivers (Jiu He). The Yellow Emperor drew the shape of Earth based on the image of Heaven, with breadth and circumference interwoven, lacking no fragment or irregularity. The *Yijing* (Book of Changes) says: "The way of Earth achieves nothing independently but succeeds through succession." Does this not describe it? A year consists of three hundred sixty-six days; by combining surplus qi and deficit new moon to establish leap months, the work of the year is completed. Man is a small heaven and earth. The Seven Superficial emulate Heaven, the Eight Interior emulate Earth, the Nine Unusual emulate the nine numbers of heaven and earth, and the supplementary three pulses symbolize the leap remainder of return to unity. The classification logic of *Maijue* seems to be merely presumptive. Now, presenting them as counterparts and pairing them with Yin and Yang, since no thing exists apart from Yin and Yang, encompassing them with Yin and Yang, all concepts of Seven Superficial, Eight Interior, Nine Unusual, and the remaining three are contained therein, awaiting the judgment of future generations.
