After the recovery from measles (Measles), one must strictly prohibit the consumption of chicken, fish, roasted meat, as well as salt and vinegar. These foods can only be eaten after forty-nine days (seven sevens) have passed. The diet should remain bland, and one must not indulge in eating to avoid future complications.
I have witnessed cases where, after the scabs of smallpox or measles had fallen off, the child’s movements, daily activities, and diet were normal, yet they suddenly died from severe cramping pain in the chest and heart. Upon investigation, this was due to weak primordial qi (Primordial Qi), allowing epidemic pestilence toxins (Epidemic Toxins) to take advantage of the weakness. The righteous qi could not overcome the pathogenic factors, so the evil pathogens lay dormant within. Externally, there appeared to be no illness, but internally, there was already depletion. Thus, upon a single encounter with the pathogen, death occurred immediately; this is called "Zhong E" (Sudden Collapse due to Evil). This misfortune was entirely self-inflicted due to improper care after the illness.
For infants under one month old who present with red spots all over the body, commonly known as "Milk Measles Sha" (Milk Measles), this condition arises from heat accumulated in the womb during fetal development, manifesting on the skin shortly after birth. It should not be treated as seasonal measles toxin (Seasonal Measles Pathogen), nor should decoctions be used recklessly. This is because the infant's zang-fu organs are delicate and cannot withstand the harsh effects of medicinal herbs. Instead, the mother should consume Suyuan Jiedu Tang (Traceability and Detoxification Decoction).
Suyuan Jiedu Tang (Traceability and Detoxification Decoction): Treats Milk Measles Sha appearing all over the body in infants after birth.
Ingredients: Zheng Chuanxiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong), Da Danggui (Angelica sinensis), Hang Baishao (Paeonia lactiflora), Huai Shengdi (Rehmannia glutinosa), Shang Jian Shen (Ginseng), Bei Shashen (Adenophora stricta), Chen Guangpi (Citrus reticulata peel), Sheng Gancao (Glycyrrhiza uralensis), Jing Lianqiao (Forsythia suspensa), Jinyinhua (Lonicera japonica), Zheng Chuanlian (Coptis chinensis), Huai Mutong (Akebia quinata stem).
Preparation: Decoct in water for the nursing mother to drink; do not let the infant take it directly.
Xia Yuzhu stated: Smallpox originates from the Zang organs, while measles originates from the Fu organs. Measles is primarily governed by the Large Intestine. Toxic vapors steaming the Lung causes coughing, a point rarely mentioned in ancient texts. People often overlook measles because its symptoms appear mild, failing to realize that although the exterior syndrome is light, if the toxin invades the Lung and Heart, it can lead to critical conditions bordering on death. Having encountered many such cases which required careful handling, I have spared no effort in detailing them here to prevent the spread of infant measles. The characteristics of measles include feverish heat, inevitable coughing, slightly hoarse voice, slight swelling of the facial skin, and slightly reddish cheeks; these are auspicious signs. If the rash emerges slowly or fails to fully erupt, or if red spots appear on the face but hide due to wind-pathogen interference, or if physicians mistakenly use cold-natured herbs causing the rash to vanish and internal pain to arise, treatment becomes difficult. Nothing is more miraculous than Tianbao Caiwei Tang (Heavenly Protection and Mulberry Leaf Decoction); nothing is more sacred. A single dose usually induces eruption. For incomplete eruptions, a second dose may be given. It has never failed to work; truly a divine prescription. However, if the Lung organ is initially deficient, and Large Intestine toxic vapors attack the Lung, resulting in a face that looks pale, floating, smooth, and devoid of luster like thin slurry, this indicates the extinction of Lung Qi and is a sign of certain death, against which medication is useless.
