Fuyuan Dan (Restoring the Original Pill)
Indicated for edema. The true fire of the Heart and Kidney generates the true earth of the Spleen and Stomach. Now, due to deficiency of the true fire's qi, it fails to nourish the true earth; thus, earth fails to control water, leading to erratic movement of fluid metabolism. The Sanjiao (Triple Burner) fails to drain, qi and vessels become obstructed, and the pivot mechanism is blocked. Symptoms include panting and urgency, overflowing water qi leaking into meridians, fullness and swelling of the limbs and skin, particularly severe in the lower legs and shins, swelling under both eyes, coldness between the thighs, bitter taste in the mouth and dry tongue, hardness and distension of the heart and abdomen, inability to lie flat on the back (lying flat induces coughing), urinary obstruction, false fright in dreams, and inability to rest peacefully.
Preparation: Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root, 2 liang), Nanmuxiang (Southern Costus Root, baked), Huixiang (Fennel Fruit, stir-fried), Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper, stir-fried until oil exudes), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Houpo (Magnolia Bark, peeled, sliced, processed with ginger juice), Doukou (Cardamom Seed, baked), Binglang (Areca Seed).
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder, mix with rice paste to form pills the size of a paulownia seed. Take 50 pills each time, at any time, washed down with Zisu Tang (Perilla Decoction). This prescription has been passed down through generations with frequent efficacy, and was not previously shown to others. It has the effect of relieving asthma attacks.
Yuyuliang Wan (Hematitum Pill)
Indicated for ten types of water qi disorders. It treats all conditions involving swelling of the feet and knees, upper body asthma and fullness, and difficult urination caused by water qi.
Preparation: Shehuang (Hematitum, large pieces, 3 liang). Place in a new iron pot weighing one tael. Heat over charcoal fire until the hematitum and pot are red hot. Remove the pot with tongs, pour the hematitum onto a clean brick floor, let cool, and grind until no sound is produced. These three substances serve as the main components. Subsequently, add the following herbs according to the patient's deficiency or excess. (Treatments for water qi often employ purgatives; however, this formula does not contain harsh drugs such as Daji, Gansui, or Yuanhua, making it safe for anyone to take.)
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Fuling (Poria), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, soaked in wine), Baidoukou (White Cardamom Seed, prepared), Tuhuixiang (Wild Fennel Fruit, stir-fried), Pengzhi (Curcuma Longa Rhizome, prepared), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma).
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder, mix thoroughly. Soak steamed wheat cake in water, squeeze out excess moisture, mix with the powder, and pound until uniform. Form pills the size of a paulownia seed. Take before meals, washed down with warm wine or plain boiled water.
Shipi San (Spleen-Strengthening Powder)
Indicated for Yin-type edema; first strengthens the Spleen earth.
Preparation: Houpo (Magnolia Bark, peeled, processed with ginger juice, stir-fried), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus, remove pulp), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, avoid direct heat), Caoguoren (Tsaoko Cardamom Seed), Dafuzi (Areca Seed), Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root).
Cut into coarse pieces. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1.5 cups of water, 5 slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), and 1 Jzao (Jujube). Decoct until reduced to 0.7 cup, strain, and take warm. Administer at any time.
Jiawei Shenqi Wan (Modified Kidney Qi Pill)
Indicated for kidney deficiency causing heavy waist and swollen feet, with difficult urination.
Preparation: Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root, 2 liang), Baifuling (Poria, peeled), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus, use flesh), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, stir-fried), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen, steamed with wine), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex).
Grind into fine powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of a paulownia seed. Take 70 pills on an empty stomach, washed down with Mi Yin (rice drink).
