Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria)
Treats jaundice caused by latent summerheat and stagnant heat, with difficult urination, irritability, and thirst. Administered with decoction of Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba). Another school holds that this formula is generally applicable for treating jaundice. (See the section on Summerheat Injury for the formula details.)
Yinchen Tang (Artemisia Decoction)
Treats jaundice due to damp-heat stagnation, characterized by scanty and painful urination, sweating only on the head, and thirst.
Yinchen Hao (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) (1.5 liang), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (0.5 liang), Xiaohong Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) (10 pieces).
Crush these into a coarse powder. Take 3 qian per dose, decoct in water, and drink warm. Wuling San can also treat jaundice; the two medicines may be decocted together.
Fanshi Huashi San (Alum and Talc Powder)
Treats damp jaundice. Symptoms include generalized body pain, fever, dark yellow complexion. After seven or eight days, if there is intense internal heat, bloody stools resembling pig liver, and abdominal fullness, urgent purgation is required. If the body and eyes are completely yellow, urination is difficult, and the pulse is deep and fine:
Fanshi (Alumen) (appropriate amount), Huashi (Talcum) (equal parts).
Grind into powder. Take 2 da qian per dose, mixed with wheat gruel, three times daily. Effective if bloody discharge occurs during defecation or urination after ingestion. Alternatively, recovery may occur through sweating.
Zhizi Wan (Gardenia Pill)
Treats epidemic diseases, acute jaundice (Ji Huang), and malarial fevers associated with pestilence.
Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Xingren (Prunus Armeniacae Semen, skin and tip removed, stir-fried, 3 fen each), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, steamed, 1 liang 1 fen), Chishao Douchi (Fermented Soybean, soaked in hot water, 2.5 fen).
Grind into powder, bind with maltose (Yiyi) to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 3 pills per dose with water. Efficacy is indicated by vomiting or diarrhea. If ineffective, increase by one pill. If any abnormal sensation in the body is felt, stop immediately.
Ku Jiu Tang (Bitter Wine Decoction)
Treats severe edema, fever, spontaneous sweating resembling cypress sap, and a deep pulse.
Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (5 liang), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (3 liang).
Crush into a coarse powder. Take 4 qian per dose, add Ku Jiu (Bitter Wine) 3 he, and water 1.5 sheng. Decoct until reduced to 0.7 sheng, strain, and take at any time. Initial intake may cause heart irritability due to the nature of the bitter wine.
Guizhi Jia Huangqi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction plus Astragalus)
Treats yellow sweat syndrome, characterized by body swelling, sweating which brings temporary relief but eventually leads to body stiffness, chest pain, absence of sweating below the waist, and a sensation of foreign bodies under the skin. In severe cases, anorexia, irritability, and difficult urination occur.
