The reason why the pulse is deficient in heatstroke (Zhongshu) is that heat damages qi but not the physical form. Moreover, summerheat in heaven is heat, on earth is fire, and in the human body's zang organs corresponds to the Heart.
Therefore, summerheat pathogen affects the Heart, causing fever and headache, resembling Taiyang disease (Shanghan), but distinguished by aversion to cold in the back and a greasy complexion. In severe cases, it leads to collapse and unconsciousness, slightly cold hands and feet, restlessness, thirst, dry mouth, vomiting or diarrhea, wheezing or abdominal fullness; all these are caused by summerheat. Generally, when suffering from summerheat-induced confusion, one must absolutely avoid giving cold water or lying on cold, damp ground; exposure to cold will lead to death. Only warm nourishment should be used: soak cloth in hot water and apply as a hot compress to the navel (Shenque) and Qihai acupoint, or scoop hot soil to circle the navel, then urinate upon it. Wait for gradual recovery, then slowly administer rice soup, followed by syndrome-specific treatment. Recently, in Jiangsu and Zhejiang regions, many cases of summerheat present with convulsions and loss of consciousness, which have been frequently observed. Medical classics state that the pulse is floating and deficient; floating indicates wind, deficient indicates summerheat. This is summerheat combined with wind injury, hence these symptoms, commonly named "Summerheat Wind" (Shufeng). If treated as epilepsy (Jingxian), it often results in untreatable conditions. In emergencies, dissolve Suhexiang Wan (Styrax Pills) in warm water and administer. Wait for the appropriate time...
