剪草疑即茜草,本草虽载其名,只云生山泽间,苦凉无毒,未明形状。《本事方》谓剪草即
茜草,婺州台州皆有之,人鲜知者,细绎方意,盖即茹芦也。
Treats chronic cough and sudden violent cough. Take one liang of Realgar (Xionghuang, 雄黄), grind it into powder, seal it with mud to dry, seal the opening with a paste made of water and Red Halloysite (Chishizhi, 赤石脂), then seal again with mud and wait for it to dry. Place it on the ground and surround it with ten jin of charcoal for calcination. When the fire has diminished by one-third, remove the heat source and wait for it to cool. Retrieve the substance, which should be bright red and glossy like a mirror surface. Grind it finely in a porcelain mortar and form pills the size of rice grains using steamed bread dough. Take three or five pills each time, swallowed with Licorice Root Decoction (Gancao Tang, 甘草汤). Sleep briefly after taking the medicine; recovery will occur after some time.
Geng Sheng notes: This formula seems too harsh and potent. It is advisable to carefully assess the patient's deficiency or excess patterns before use. I once used another formula to treat chronic cough with considerable efficacy, which is appended below:
Take one Citron (Xiangyuan, 香橼), remove the core and slice it. Pound it thoroughly with clear wine, place it in a clay pot, and simmer slowly over low heat from dusk until the fifth watch of the night. Mix well with honey, wake the patient, and instruct them to take it with a spoon. After ingestion, let them sleep for a short while; one dose results in a cure.
Another formula: Take a bundle of tender mulberry branches facing south, break them into inch-long pieces. Place them in a clay pot, add five bowls of water, and decoct until only one bowl remains. Drinking this is also effective.
Specially treats blood disorders. Take one jin of Jiancao (Jiancao, 剪草), wash it clean, dry it in the sun, and grind it into powder. Add two jin of raw honey and mix into a paste. Store in a container, ensuring no contact with iron vessels. Steam and sun-dry once daily, repeating the process nine times (nine steamings and nine dryings) before stopping. At the fifth watch, the patient sits facing east, remaining silent. Take four spoonfuls of the medicine with a spoon, and after a while, suppress the medication with thin millet drink. The medicine should be taken cold, and the millet drink should not be too hot. Vomiting or retching after ingestion is acceptable. For chronic lung damage causing hemoptysis, one dose brings a cure. For ordinary coughing up of blood or spontaneous bleeding, one spoonful per dose is sufficient. This medicine is excellent.
Geng Sheng notes: This is a formula by Academician Xu, specifically treating tuberculosis with hematemesis, lung injury, and spontaneous bleeding. Lord Xu highly praised its efficacy, calling it "divinely bestowed."
Jiancao is suspected to be Rubia cordifolia (Qiancao, 茜草). Although Materia Medica records its name, stating it grows in mountains and marshes, is bitter, cool, non-toxic, and lacks a clear description of its shape, *Ben Shi Fang* states that Jiancao is Qiancao, found in Wuzhou and Taizhou, though rarely known by people. Careful analysis of the formula's intent suggests it refers to Ru Lu (which is Qiancao).
