Abdominal distension (Gu Zhang) persisting for years without death is certainly not Water Distension (abdominal distension characterized primarily by ascites), but rather Qi Distension (distension primarily due to qi stagnation), Blood Distension (distension primarily due to blood stasis), Food Distension (distension primarily due to food retention), or Worm Distension (distension primarily due to parasitic infection). As long as the patient's urination is unobstructed and their appetite opens, all these conditions are treatable.
Prescription: Poria (Fuling) five taels, Ginseng Root (Renshen) one tael, Omphalia Fungus (Leiwuan) three qian, Licorice Root (Gancao) two qian, Radish Seed (Luobozhi) one tael, Atractylodes Rhizome (Baizhu) five qian, Rhubarb (Dahuang) one tael, Aconite Root (Fuzi) one qian. Add ten bowls of water, decoct until two bowls of liquid remain. Take one bowl in the morning; there will inevitably be borborygmus (intestinal rumbling), and shortly after, a large amount of foul matter will be discharged, filling a bucket. Discard it immediately and replace with a new bucket; then take the second bowl. There will inevitably be another severe diarrhea, which stops by dusk. Drink light rice soup thereafter, and the diarrhea will cease. However, since the patient is extremely exhausted, urgently administer the following conditioning prescription to regulate the body.
Conditioning Prescription: Ginseng Root (Renshen) one qian, Poria (Fuling) five qian, Coix Seed (Yiren) one tael, Chinese Yam (Shanyao) four qian, Tangerine Peel (Chenpi) five fen, White Mustard Seed (Baijiezi) one qian. Decoct in water and take; one dose results in complete recovery.
Note by Gengsheng: This prescription originates from *Shishi Milu* and also appears in *Guanju Fang Yaobu*. I have tried it and found it highly effective. In *Guanju Fang*, Poria is used at five taels; this dosage should be followed, as Poria is bland and tasteless. In *Guanju Fang*, Tangerine Peel is used at five fen; this dosage should be followed, otherwise it is too harsh in dispersing qi.
Realgar (Xionghuang) one tael, Alum (Baifan) one tael, grind into powder, mix with wheat paste to form a paste, and apply externally. If ineffective, reapply; it will surely heal within several months.
For cases with ambiguous symptoms, decoct Gastrodia Rhizome (Qinjiao) with cow's milk and take orally. Recovery occurs quickly after three to five bowel movements.
To treat pediatric jaundice (Xiao'er Huangdan), characterized by yellow eyes and spleen heat: Roast dried Trichosanthes Fruit (Gualou) to dryness. Take one qian per dose. Add half a sheng of water, decoct until seven-tenths remains, and take at bedtime. During the fifth watch (5:00–7:00 AM), yellow matter will be discharged, leading to immediate recovery.
Horse manure one tael (stir-fried until black), mixed with a pinch of yellow earth (lightly stir-fried). Take five qian while hot with yellow wine. Pain disappears instantly, manifesting as vomiting or diarrhea; once qi circulation is restored, pain resolves.
Note: This prescription also treats Cholera-like syndrome (Huoluan) with miraculous efficacy. Boiling water can be used for mixing instead of yellow wine.
Sulfur (Liuhuang) half a jin, Mulberry branch ash (Sangcha Hui) five dou. Leach the ash with water to obtain the lye. Boil for three zhou periods. Test with an iron spoon over fire; if the fire subsides, stop heating. Dry the residue using high heat. If the fire does not subside, continue boiling until it does. Grind the product into fine powder. Dig a pit one chi two cun deep, fill with water, wait for the water to clarify, then mix the clear water with sulfur powder. Decoct in a pot until it forms a paste. Scoop out with an iron spoon, grind finely, and make pills the size of hemp seeds using rice flour. Take ten pills on an empty stomach with salt water. Extremely effective.
