Thirst. Fruits and melons lodge in the lower epigastrium, causing rejection and conflict (vomiting or discomfort). This indicates severe damage to the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner/Spleen-Stomach system). Moreover, since even hot drinks are barely tolerated, it can be deduced that Stomach Yang is critically depleted, and pathogenic factors are consolidated and entrenched internally.
Regarding summerheat diseases complicated by seasonal wind causing irritability, and conditions where Clear and Turbid Qi are disordered, ancient sages often prioritized using 50-60 pills of Laifu Dan (Reviving Pill) to restore the movement of Clear and Turbid Qi. In situations where both attacking pathogens and tonifying deficiency are difficult to apply, one can only hope for its miraculous efficacy. Formula: Laifu Dan.
Patient Wu presented with yellowing of the eyes, epigastric fullness and oppression, a sensation of obstruction in the throat, nausea and vomiting. There was slight chills but significant fever. This is an injury caused by external Summerheat-Dampness pathogenic factors, leading to blockage of the Sanjiao (Triple Burner). It is not a Wind-Cold pattern.
Prescription: Da Zhu Ye (Large Leaf Bamboo Sheath), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Hua Shi (Talcum), Chen Pi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Hou Po (Magnolia Bark), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber), Jiang Zhi (Ginger Juice).
Additionally, Summerheat, Dampness, and Heat are all Qi-level pathogens. They accumulate and ferment into Turbid Phlegm in the Stomach, resulting in a sweet and sticky taste in the mouth, heaviness and stagnation, and lack of appetite. The proposed treatment is to diffuse Qi and resolve Phlegm.
Prescription: Chuan Bei Mu (Fritillaria Bulb), Gua Lou Pi (Trichosanthes Peel), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Hei Shan Zhi (Black Gardenia Fruit), Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome), along with Er Xian San (Two Sages Powder) taken separately.
Patient [Name Omitted], age 41. The pulse is Wiry (Xian). In the afternoon, there is aversion to cold followed by sensations resembling fever. There is no appetite, and urination is difficult, scanty, and dark red. The blazing Summerheat invades the Lung and Wei (Defensive) levels from outside, circulating through the Sanjiao (Triple Burner), causing obstruction and closure at the Qi level.
The Harmonizing Method should be employed. A bland diet is advisable to prevent the onset of Malaria.
Prescription: Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Xiang Ru (Mosla Herb), Mu Tong (Akebia Stem), Fei Hua Shi (Purified Talcum), Fu Ling (Poria), Hou Po (Magnolia Bark), Bai Kou Ren (White Cardamom Seed), Dan Zhu Ye (Lophatherum Leaf).
Second visit: Follow the previous prescription, remove Xiang Ru, add Ban Xia.
Patient Yang, age 28. Summerheat must carry Dampness. It enters via respiration and first injures the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner). Therefore, Zhang Zhongjing’s Treatise on Cold Damage begins by differentiating the Six Channels, while Liu Hejian’s Treatise on Warm-Thermal diseases requires investigating the Sanjiao (Triple Burner). Generally speaking, Summerheat...
