Patient Zhu: The epidemic pestilence and turbid pathogenic factors are inhaled through the mouth and nose. They distribute throughout the Sanjiao (Triple Burner). They diffuse and disturb the Shen (Spirit/Mind). This is not a wind-cold external pathogen, nor is it a stagnation syndrome in the interior. Therefore, methods of dispersing (releasing the exterior) and guiding out stagnation (promoting digestion) will violate the taboo of depleting Jin-Ye (Body Fluids). It is greatly different from the Six Meridian syndromes of Shanghan (Cold Damage). Currently, there is sore throat, Danzhen (erysipelas-like rash), the tongue is crimson like cinnabar, mental restlessness, and evening drowsiness/coma. This indicates that turbid pathogens were received from above and moved counter-flow to the Shanzhong (Chest Center). One should clear the blood collaterals to prevent obstruction and closure. However, large doses of detoxifying herbs must be used to drive out the turbidity. Only after nine days, if coma does not occur, can one hope for the departure of the pathogen and the recovery of Zheng Qi (Upright Qi). (Pestilence pathogen enters Shanzhong and gradually affects the Pericardium.)
Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao), Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao), Rehmannia Root (Shengdi), Scrophularia Root (Xuanshen), Acorus Rhizome (Changpu), Curcuma Tuber (Yujin), Honeysuckle Flower (Yinhua), Human Feces Distillate (Jinzhi).
Patient Yao: Epidemic toxin. Oral ulcers/maceration, erysipelas-like rash, hoarseness. Treatment focuses on the Upper Jiao.
Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao), Fresh Rehmannia Root (Xianshengdi), Scrophularia Root (Xuanshen), Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao), Stone Acorus Rhizome (Shichangpu), Honeysuckle Flower (Yinhua), Human Feces Distillate (Jinzhi), Zhibao Pill (Zhibao Dan).
Patient Tan: Inhaled turbid qi through the mouth and nose. From the Lung system, it gradually affects the Pericardium Collateral. Initially, sore throat and dry tongue. The greatest fear is the manifestation of orifice closure and Shen coma. Epidemic toxin infectious diseases are not treated with the same methods as wind-cold stagnation.
Scrophularia Root (Xuanshen), Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao), Curcuma Tuber (Yujin), Honeysuckle Flower (Yinhua), Stone Acorus Rhizome (Shichangpu), Indigo Leaf (Dianye), Belamcanda Rhizome (Shegan), Arctium Seed (Niubangzi), mixed with one cup of True White Human Feces Distillate (Zhenbai Jinzhi).
Patient Yang: Inhaled epidemic pestilence. All three Jiaos are affected. Over time, the Blood level gradually becomes stasis. The more it knots, the hotter it gets. One should use salty and bitter preparations. Still, it remains light and ascending to regulate the upper part, imitating the ancient principle of "large preparation, small dosage."
Scrophularia Root (Xuanshen), Watermelon Rind (Xiguacuiyi), Honeysuckle Dew (Jinyinhualu), Clear White Human Feces Distillate (Yingbai Jinzhi).
Patient Jin: When at rest, Shen becomes confused. The pestilence pathogen has entered Shanzhong. Mr. Wang's prescription is excellent. My opinion is to combine aromatic herbs to open the orifices and expel turbidity. (Zhibao Pill).
The epidemic pestilence syndrome all enters through the mouth and nose. It travels directly along the central pathway and spreads through the Sanjiao. Unlike the Six Meridians of Shanghan, which can be treated by sweating (releasing the exterior) or purging (draining downward). Yi (Epidemic) is turbid qi. The reason ancients drank aromatic substances and gathered Lanceroot (Lancao) was to attack fragrant qi, heavily cleansing the turbidity. Regarding its transmission: when upward movement reaches its extreme, it goes down; when downward movement reaches its extreme, it goes up. Thus, pathogens in the Upper Jiao manifest as hoarseness and oral maceration. If they counter-transmit to Shanzhong, they manifest as Shen coma and crimson tongue, sore throat, and erysipelas-like rash. Observing the prescriptions formulated by this gentleman, within clearing and resolving, aromatic herbs to open orifices and expel turbidity are necessarily added, such as Rhinoceros Horn, Acorus, Honeysuckle, and Curcuma. Combined with Zhibao Pill, it penetrates from the exterior to the interior. Using spiritual/natural substances to internally connect to the Heart orifices, searching out hidden depths. What needs unblocking is unblocked; what needs calming is calmed. If the pathogen enters the Ying (Nutritive) level, and the Sanjiao are mixed, with heat knotting more and pathogen going deeper, theoretically, the method of salty and bitter large preparations should be used. However, one still fears the drug properties acting too quickly and moving straight downward. Therefore, Scrophularia Root, Honeysuckle Dew, Human Feces Distillate, and Trichosanthes Peel are used to lightly regulate the upper part. This is what is meant by imitating ancient methods without being bound by them. Examining this syndrome, only Zhang Jingyue, Yu Jiayan, and Wu Keyou discussed it most thoroughly. However, following Zhang and Yu risks leaving pathogens and causing lingering illness. Following Wu risks damaging Zheng Qi while eliminating the pathogen. It lies in weighing factors during clinical practice: do not make excess conditions more excessive, do not make deficiency conditions more deficient, thereby avoiding bringing premature death upon patients. Only then can one truly be called a good physician. (Commentary by Zou Zijiu)
Xu's Commentary: Treating seasonal epidemics does not go beyond these types of prescriptions. If it is a pestilence, it is an evil toxicity transmitted at one time. Without using spirit-connecting mineral and metal substances, carefully preparing several types, and administering according to symptoms, efficacy cannot be achieved.
