It is essential for women to know the taboos before pregnancy. This song must be kept in mind.
After conception, one must strictly avoid eating certain foods. Not only are there warnings about disturbing the fetal qi, but also according to the nature of things, there are aversions. If one does not abstain from fish and chicken eggs, the child may develop malnutrition syndrome (Gan Ji, 疳积) and many sores. Eating dog meat may cause the child to lose their voice. Eating duck and mulberries together may cause breech presentation and cold heart. Eating crab may cause transverse presentation. Eating soft-shelled turtle may cause a short neck and damage the fetus. Eating rabbit meat may cause cleft lip. Eating sparrow meat with bean paste may cause black spots on the child's face. Eating bean paste with Agastache rugosa (Huoxiang, 藿香) may cause abortion. Eating sparrow meat may make the child shameless and prone to lust. Eating goat meat may make the child prone to illness. Eating Sichuan pepper and garlic may damage the child's eyes. Eating fresh ginger may cause multiple fingers with sores. Eating toad and pufferfish may cause aphonia. Eating donkey, mule, or horse meat may cause post-term difficult labor.
For those who are pregnant, regulation should be based on symptoms. For example, in the first and second months, menstruation stops. The condition seems like an illness but is not; there is yawning, fatigue, mental dullness, and weak limbs. Palpating the pulse: slippery, large, and uniform, or the chi pulse is unceasing, indicates pregnancy. The *Mai Jue* states: Liver governs blood, Lung governs qi. Blood is Ying (Nutritive), Qi is Wei (Defensive). Yin and Yang match without discrepancy; harmony between the two organs follows this pattern. If blood is deficient and qi is prosperous, there is no pregnancy; if blood is prosperous and qi is deficient, there is pregnancy. Cun (inch) pulse micro, Guan (middle) pulse slippery, Chi (cubit) pulse rapid, flowing smoothly like a bird pecking. Children's pulses show form, yet several months of pregnancy remain unnoticed. The *Classic* says: "Yin pulse beats strongly and differs from Yang, called having a child." 'Bo' means close; Yin pulse approaches below, Yang pulse emerges above. Yang seen within Yin is the slippery pulse. Slippery and moving pulse indicates Yin acting and Yang transforming, legally indicating pregnancy. Strong movement of the Foot Shaoyin kidney meridian pulse indicates pregnancy. Hand Shaoyin belongs to Heart, Foot Shaoyin belongs to Kidney governing essence. When essence and blood intersect and consciousness enters there, pregnancy occurs. Additionally, if the three positions of the pulse are sunken, regular, and equal with no illness, but menstruation has ceased, it is pregnancy. The *Mai Jing* states: Floating and vigorous chi pulse on the left hand indicates a male fetus; floating and vigorous chi pulse on the right hand indicates a female fetus. Both chi pulses vigorous indicate twin boys; both sunken and solid indicate twin girls. Also, one beat followed by a pause at the middle finger indicates one month of pregnancy; two pauses indicate two months. These are the old examples of pregnancy pulses. However, due to recent changes in climatic influences, pulses often differ from previous methods.
The first month begins like dewdrops, named Tai Pei (Embryo). Foot Jueyin Liver meridian nourishes it. All twelve meridians nourish the fetus, but why does the Liver meridian alone nourish it at the beginning? Because the embryo is the beginning of blood, formed in the Liver, which stores blood; this is the cooperation of creation. However, who governs the initial reception of qi? It is the Foot Shaoyin Kidney meridian. Heaven generates Water, receiving qi earliest; thus, males generate the left kidney first, females the right kidney. In women, the right kidney also connects to the uterus, serving as the root of the fetus. The primordial true one qi emanates here as an omen. Foot Jueyin Liver nourishing the fetus often causes nausea and vomiting, called E Zu (Morning Sickness). Because Liver is often excessive and cannot tolerate foreign objects, now with pregnancy, Liver qi is obstructed by the fetus and cannot disperse, hence nausea and vomiting. After this, other meridians nourish the fetus, and morning sickness ceases.
The second month resembles peach petals, named Tai Gao (Fetal Paste). Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder meridian nourishes it. At this time, the abdomen may move or not, allowing for doubt. If there is vomiting, aversion, and craving for sour taste, pregnancy is clear.
The third month resembles a silkworm cocoon, then called Tai (Fetus). Hand Jueyin Pericardium meridian nourishes it. The pulse is slippery and rapid, scattering upon heavy pressure. Male and female forms are not yet determined. [Note: Original text suggests changing female to male, likely a textual error or specific folk practice context]. This month is governed by Ministerial Fire; the fetus is easily aborted, so caution is needed.
The fourth month distinguishes male and female. Males crave sour taste, females crave bland taste. Beginning to receive Water Essence to form blood vessels. Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao meridian nourishes it. Rapid left pulse indicates male, rapid right pulse indicates female. Rapid pulses on both sides indicate twins.
The fifth month begins to receive Fire Essence to form Yin and Yang qi. Foot Taiyin Spleen meridian nourishes it. Spleen governs the four seasons; in the fifth month, the fetus's four limbs are formed. Palpating the pulse: heavy pressure does not scatter, but it is rapid and not slippery, indicating the fifth-month pulse. If the pulse is tight, chest obstruction is certain; if slow, abdominal fullness and panting are certain; if floating, edema due to water qi is certain.
The sixth month begins to receive Metal Essence to form tendons. Foot Yangming Stomach meridian nourishes it. The pulse prefers string-like and long; slow and choppy pulses warn of miscarriage. For fetal instability in the fifth and sixth months, with slight abdominal pain, lower back pain, or poor appetite, use An Tai Yin (Stabilize Fetus Decoction) or Gu Tai Yin (Solidify Fetus Decoction).
The seventh month begins to receive Wood Essence to form bones. Hand Taiyin Lung meridian nourishes it. Males move towards the left hypochondrium, females towards the right. Slippery and rapid pulses indicate fetal restlessness. If sudden profuse discharge of foul fluid occurs, the fetus will fall, called premature rupture of membranes; immediately administer An Tai Yin.
The eighth month begins to receive Earth Essence to form skin. Hand Yangming Large Intestine meridian nourishes it. Solid, large, string-tight pulses indicate children who will live long; sunken, fine, weak pulses indicate poor prognosis for the child. If the fetus is unstable, administer Gu Tai Yin.
The ninth month begins to receive Stone Essence to form hair and skin. All joints are complete. Foot Shaoyin Kidney meridian nourishes it. Da Sheng San (Life-Reaching Powder) is suitable.
The tenth month, all five zang and six fu organs are complete, absorbing heaven and earth qi into the Dantian. Natural delivery is expected; Hua Tai Yin (Slippery Fetus Decoction) is suitable.
