During the prenatal period, one should clear heat to nourish fetal blood. If a parturient experiences asthma and urgency due to fire pathogen disturbing the fetus and causing rebellious Qi ascending, immediately use powder of Tiao Qin (a type of Scutellariae Radix) and Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma), mixed with water for administration. Tiao Qin is best when it sinks in water. Abortion results from Qi deficiency, Blood deficiency, or Blood heat. Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) stabilizes the fetus; it acts on the Upper and Middle Jiao and can descend fire downward. Yi Mu Cao (Leonuri Herba), also known as Chong Wei Zi (Leonuri Fructus), treats various diseases before and after childbirth; it invigorates Blood and nourishes Blood. For dystocia, decoctions can be made into pastes; Di Huang Gao (Rehmanniae Paste) and Xi Gao are all usable. A pregnant woman's craving for specific foods indicates deficiency in a certain Zang organ. For instance, if the Liver is deficient, its Qi is only sufficient to nourish the fetus and has no surplus to nourish itself; thus, "it cannot moisten the Liver," and Liver deficiency leads to a craving for sour foods. For prenatal fetal stabilization, Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and Huang Qin are excellent herbs. Tiao Qin is the sacred herb for stabilizing the fetus. Laypeople know this but fear its cold nature and dare not use it, instead believing that warm-hot herbs can nourish the fetus. They do not realize that clearing heat during pregnancy allows Blood to follow the meridians without reckless flow, thereby nourishing the fetus. When fetal heat approaches the month of delivery, use San Bu Wan (Three Tonics Pill) added with fried Xiang Fu and fried Bai Shao, made into pills with steamed dough. To suppress heat, use San Bu Wan with Di Huang Gao. In the eighth or ninth month of pregnancy, Qi must be smoothed using Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus) and Zi Su Geng (Perillae Caulis). Generally, if a pregnant woman's pulse is fine and even, childbirth will be easy; if the pulse is large, floating, and slow, it indicates scattered Fire Qi, leading to difficult childbirth. Childbirth is like carrying a boat over a dam.
