Amnesia is mostly caused by a deficiency of spirit and vital energy, but it can also be due to phlegm.
Dai Yuanli stated: People with amnesia start things without finishing them and speak without coherence between the beginning and end. This is considered a disease name, distinct from congenital stupidity or ignorance of human affairs.
[Appendix] The syndrome of amnesia is all caused by excessive worry and overthinking, which damages the Pericardium (Pericardium Meridian of Hand-Jueyin), leading to an unclear dwelling place for the Spirit (Shen). Consequently, one tends to forget things easily. This results from excessive mental exertion, with pathology located in the Heart and Spleen. It is also said that overthinking injures the Spleen, causing dimness during the day and memory loss. Treatment involves Gui Pi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction), requiring simultaneous regulation of the Heart and Spleen so that the Spirit becomes tranquil and intentions stable, thereby resolving the syndrome.
Attached Formula:
Gui Pi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction): Treats amnesia and palpitations (restlessness and fear of being startled) caused by excessive mental exertion damaging the Heart and Spleen.
Herbs: Atractylodis Rhizoma (Baizhu), Poria (Fushen), Astragali Radix (Huangqi), Dimocarpus Longan Aril (Yuanyuanrou), Ziziphi Spinosae Semen (Suanzaoren, stir-fried, each 1 liang), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang, each half liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, roasted, 2 qian 5 fen).

Herbs: Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi, 2 liang), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 1 liang), Pogostemonis Herba (Shichangpu, 1 liang), Poria (Baifuling, 3 liang).

(Attached: Limb Joint Pain)
Wandering pain in the four limbs and hundred joints is this syndrome. In other texts, it is called "White Tiger Periarticular Wind" syndrome. Generally, it is categorized into Phlegm, Wind-Heat, Damp-Wind, and Blood Deficiency. If caused by Wind, use Xiao Xu Ming Tang (Minor Continuation of Life Decoction); if caused by Dampness, use Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) and Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), assisted by Zhuli (Bamboo Juice); if caused by Phlegm, use Er Chen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) added with Jiuhuang Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix fried with wine) and Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma); if caused by Blood Deficiency, use Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong) and Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), assisted by Honghua (Carthami Flos) and Taoren (Persicae Semen). The general foundational formula includes Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi), Arisaematis Rhizoma (Nanxing), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), and Jiuhuang Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix fried with wine). For pain in the upper body, add Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Sparaxis (Weilingxian), and Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus); for pain in the lower body, add Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi), Podophylli Emodi Rhizoma et Radix (Fangji), Akebiae Caulis (Mutong), and Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai). Regarding Blood Deficiency, Ge Zhi Yu Lun has detailed discussions, mainly using Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong) and Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), assisted by Taoren (Persicae Semen), Honghua (Carthami Flos), Bo Gui (Thin Cinnamon Twig), and Weilingxian (Sparaxis). To treat Gout (Tongfeng), select thin cinnamon twigs with a mild flavor; only these can travel horizontally through the arms, guiding Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma) and Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) to the painful areas.
Another Prescription: Treats pain in the upper, middle, and lower parts of the body.
Herbs: Arisaematis Rhizoma Praeparatum (Nanxing, ginger-processed), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu, soaked in rice wash), Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai, wine-fried, each 2 liang), Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong, 1 liang), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi, half liang), Massae Fermentatae Medicinalis (Shenqu, stir-fried, 1 liang), Persicae Semen (Taoren, half liang), Carthami Flos (Honghua, wine-washed, 1 qian 5 fen), Gentiana Scabra Radix et Rhizoma (Caolongdan, half qian, directs downward).
Usage: Grind into fine powder, bind with Shenqu paste to form pills the size of Chinese quince seeds. Take 100 pills per dose on an empty stomach, washed down with plain boiled water.
Zhang Ziyuan had deficient Qi and Blood with Phlegm, presenting with white turbid discharge and Yin-Fire Gout.
Herbs: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 1 liang), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shudihuang), Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai, black-roasted, each 2 liang), Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao), Filicinae Rhizoma (Haishi), Arisaematis Rhizoma (Nanxing, each 1 liang), Cynomorii Herba (Suoyang, half liang), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang, burnt to ash, half liang, to prevent dispersion of action), Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum (Baiguiban, wine-roasted, 2 liang).
Usage: Grind into fine powder, bind with congee paste or wine paste to form pills. One version says wine paste.
Arm Pain Formula:
Herbs: Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu, 1 qian 5 fen), Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Banxia), Arisaematis Rhizoma (Nanxing), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Scutellariae Radix (Jiuqin, fried), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu, each 1 qian), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Poria (Fuling, each half qian), Sparaxis (Weilingxian, 3 qian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, a small amount; another edition adds Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix/Qianghuo 1 qian).

[Appendix] Wandering pain in all bone joints, quiet during the day but severe at night, resembling bites from a tiger, is named "White Tiger Periarticular Wind." All cases should be treated with Ji Jian Di Xian Dan (Modified Immortal Earth Pill), Qing Long Wan (Green Dragon Pill), or Ruxiang Wan (Boswellia Pill).
There is also Gout where pain is fixed in one location, with redness, swelling, and burning heat at the painful site, or high fever throughout the body; this indicates impending Wind-Toxin, and Bai Du San (Eliminate Toxin Powder) is suitable. For treating arm pain generally, use Er Chen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) added with Jiuhuang Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix fried with wine), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), and Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix).
For limb joint pain, Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) must be used; it is also suitable for dispelling Wind-Damp. For obese individuals with limb joint pain, it is mostly Wind-Damp combined with Phlegm-Fluid flowing into collaterals, so Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma) and Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) are appropriate. For thin individuals with limb joint pain, it is due to Blood Deficiency, so Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) and Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) is suitable. For thin individuals with irritable temper who suffer from limb joint pain attacks, it is due to Blood-Heat, so Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Jiuhuang Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex fried with wine) is suitable. For swollen and painful joints with a slippery pulse, dryness-promoting herbs are needed, such as Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) and Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma), combined with Qi-moving herbs like Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), and Binglang (Arecae Semen); for lower body involvement, add Hanfangji (Podophylli Emodi Rhizoma et Radix). If joints are swollen and painful with a choppy and rapid pulse, this is Blood Stasis, so Taoren (Persicae Semen), Honghua (Carthami Flos), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizome), and Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) to induce mild purgation are suitable. For fatigue and weakness accompanied by limb joint pain, this is Qi Deficiency with Phlegm-Fluid flowing into collaterals, so Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma), and Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) are appropriate. Zhu Danxi did not have a section on limb joint pain in his original work; this text reads purely like Zhu Danxi's language, so it is recorded provisionally for experts to verify.
Xiao Xu Ming Tang (Minor Continuation of Life Decoction) and Di Xian Dan (Immortal Earth Pill) are both found in the Stroke category.
Zhou Che Wan (Boat Cart Pill) is found in the Dampness category.
Dao Shui Wan (Water-Guiding Pill) is found in the Dysentery category.
Shen Xiong Wan (Divine Ligusticum Pill) is found in the Fever category.
Bai Du San (Eliminate Toxin Powder) is found in the Plague category.
Ruxiang Wan (Boswellia Pill):
Herbs: Bai Fu Zi (Typhonii Rhizoma, prepared), Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Moyao (Myrrhae Resina), Chi Xiaodou (Vigna Angularis Semen), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba, cleaned), Gusuibu (Drynariae Rhizoma, hair removed), Ruxiang (Boswelliae Resina, each 1 liang), Wulingzhi (Trogopterori Faeces), Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix, prepared, skin and tip removed), Nuomi (Oryzae Fructus Glutinosa, fried, each 2 liang), Caowutou (Aconiti Radix, prepared, skin and tip removed), Jingmo (Beijing Inkstone Ink, calcined, each 5 liang), Songzhi (Pini Resin, half liang, ground).
Usage: Grind into fine powder, bind with wine paste to form pills the size of Chinese quince seeds. Take 10-15 pills per dose, swallowed with cold wine; tea is also acceptable, time不限. Avoid hot foods.
