Epistaxis is primarily treated by cooling the blood and promoting blood circulation, which is generally similar to hematemesis. Camellia flower powder can be administered with child's urine (Tongbian), ginger juice, and wine mixed together. Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction) should be used in conjunction with Yujin (Curcuma aromatica). Huangqin (Scutellaria baicalensis), Shengma (Cimicifuga foetida), and Xijiao (Rhinoceros horn) possess detoxifying properties. Alternatively, Yujin powder mixed with child's urine, ginger juice, and wine can be taken orally. If blood flows retrograde and forms bloody clots, manifesting as hematemesis or spitting of blood, drinking leek juice (Jiu zhi) yields immediate results. For treating sweating blood, bloody sweat, and epistaxis, Renzhongbai (Human Urine Sediment, also known as Qiushi/Calcined Human Urine Stone) is heated on a new tile until dry, mixed with a small amount of Shexiang (Musk), ground into fine powder, and taken with wine; this method is empirically effective. Epistaxis originates from the Lung; it is primarily treated with substances such as Xijiao (Rhinoceros horn), Shengma (Cimicifuga foetida), Zhizi (Gardenia jasminoides), Huangqin (Scutellaria baicalensis), Shaoyao (Peony root), Shengdihuang (Rehmannia glutinosa fresh root), Ziwan (Aster tataricus), Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza), and Ejiao (Donkey-hide gelatin). The *Yuanbing Shi* states: "Nü" refers to Yang-heat stagnation obstructing the Foot-Yangming Meridian and rising upward; heat causes blood to move recklessly, thus resulting in epistaxis.
Attached Formulas
Hejian Shengdihuang San (Shengdi Decoction from Hejian): Treats epistaxis due to stagnant heat, or hemoptysis and hematemesis, effective for all.
Ingredients: Gouqi (Lycium fruit), Chaihu (Bupleurum root), Huanglian (Coptis rhizome), Diguxu (Lycium bark root), Tiandong (Asparagus tuber), Baishao (White peony root), Gancao (Licorice root), Huangqin (Scutellaria baicalensis), Huangqi (Astragalus root), Shengdihuang (Rehmannia glutinosa fresh root), Shudihuang (Rehmannia glutinosa prepared root) (equal parts).
Preparation and Administration: Cut the herbs. Decoct in water and take orally. If there is lower body bleeding, add Diyü (Sanguisorba root).
Another Prescription: Treats epistaxis.
Ingredient: Fulonggan (Dragon's House Earth/Fired Clay) (half sheng).
Preparation and Administration: Take one large bowl of fresh well-water, wash the Fulonggan to extract the juice, mix with honey, and take in one dose.
Qigen San (Qian Root Powder): Treats unceasing nasal bleeding.
Ingredients: Qigen (Rubia cordifolia root), Ejiao (Donkey-hide gelatin, stir-fried with clam shell powder), Huangqin (Scutellaria baicalensis) (each 1 liang), Gancao (Licorice root, roasted) (0.5 liang), Cebaiye (Platycladus orientalis leaf), Shengdihuang (Rehmannia glutinosa fresh root).
Preparation and Administration: Decoct with one zhong of water and three slices of ginger. Take orally.
Huangqin Shaoyao Tang (Scutellaria and Peony Decoction): Treats unceasing epistaxis.
Ingredients: Huangqin (Scutellaria baicalensis), Shaoyao (Peony root), Gancao (Licorice root) (equal parts).
Preparation and Administration: Decoct in water and take orally. If Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction) is used but Rhinoceros horn is unavailable, substitute with Shengma (Cimicifuga foetida). The nose connects to the brain; when blood overflows upwards to the brain, it exits through the nose. For any epistaxis, use Maohua (Foxtail millet flowers) to mix with Zhi Nu San (Stop Bleeding Powder), administer frequently, and allow the patient to drink Xi'er gan (second rice washing water). Additionally, apply sesame oil drops into the nostrils, or radish juice may be used. A combination of Maohua (Foxtail millet flowers) and Baishaoyao (White peony root) in equal halves is particularly stable. External Method: Wet paper with Jinghua shui (well water drawn from the surface), and apply it to the vertex of the head. For left-sided bleeding, tie the middle finger of the left hand with thread; for right-sided bleeding, tie the right hand; if both sides bleed, tie both hands. Alternatively, blow Chaohei Puhuang (charred Lycopodium spores) into the nostrils.
Longgu Zhi Nu San (Dragon Bone Stop-Bleeding Powder):
Ingredients: Huangqi (Astragalus root) (6 qian), Chi Fuling (Red Poria cocos), Baishao (White peony root), Danggui (Angelica sinensis), Shengdihuang (Rehmannia glutinosa fresh root), Ejiao (Donkey-hide gelatin) (each 3 qian).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with Huangqi (Astragalus root) decoction after meals.
Xiong Fu Yin (Chuanxiong and Cyperus Drink):
Ingredients: Chuanxiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong rhizome) (2 liang), Xiangfu (Cyperus rotundus rhizome) (4 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with tea water.
Another Method: Treats hematemesis due to Heart-heat and unceasing epistaxis.
Ingredient: Baiye Liuhua (Flowers of Punica granatum var. multiplex) (as needed).
Preparation and Administration: Dry and grind into powder. Blow into the nostrils; cure is immediate.
