These conditions are caused by either an excess or a deficiency of Blood. When in excess, Blood becomes too hot and overflows upward, causing congestion in the eyes and resulting in pain; when deficient, the lack of Blood fails to nourish the eyes, leading to pain. The outer canthus of the eye belongs to the Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) channel, where there is little Blood and much Qi; the upper eyelid belongs to the Taiyang (Greater Yang) channel, where there is much Blood and little Qi; the lower eyelid belongs to the Yangming (Yang Brightness) channel, where both Blood and Qi are abundant. Only the Foot-Jueyin Liver Channel connects directly to the eye system.
Treatment principles: For Blood excess, use methods to drain or puncture (Jue); for Blood deficiency, use tonification. Assist with acrid herbs to disperse, cool herbs to clear heat, sweating methods, or emetic methods.
When Wind-Heat enters the brain due to deficiency, it should be treated with acrid-cool herbs to disperse and promote circulation. For dizziness, visual blurring, headache, and cephalalgia involving the brain, acrid-cool herbs should also be used to disperse and promote circulation.
