For various types of Lin syndrome (a disease characterized by frequent and urgent urination, scanty and turbid urine, painful dribbling, incomplete emptying, and discomfort in the lower abdomen or pain radiating to the waist) that do not cease, with red and astringent urine, painful urination, and even Zhuanbao (urinary retention during pregnancy caused by fetal pressure on the bladder), use tender *Physalis alkekengi* (Chinese lantern fruit). Wash it clean, squeeze out one he of juice, mix with one he of wine, and take it on an empty stomach. This is very effective.
To treat astringent urinary disorders, take five liang of Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi), boil in three sheng of wine until reduced to half a sheng, strain off the dregs, and divide into three doses. This formula also treats hard and painful blood stasis.
For Xuelin (hematuria accompanied by pain), take a handful of Bamboo Shavings (Zhuru), decoct in water, and take warm on an empty stomach for immediate effect.
Forced retention of urine can lead to Zhuanbao. Use powder of Talcum (Huashi), taken with Scallion White Decoction (Congtou Tang), two qian at a time.
A forty-year-old woman, nine months pregnant, suffered from Zhuanbao, unable to urinate for three days. Her lower limbs were swollen and tense, making life unbearable. Her pulse was exhausted; the right side was choppy (Se) while the left was slightly harmonious. This was likely due to consuming abalone, which injured Qi and damaged the ligaments supporting the fetus. The weakness prevented them from holding the fetus up, causing it to press down on the bladder, displacing it to one side. Qi was blocked by this compression, so the orifice could not open. Diseases of Zhuanbao are generally like this. Therefore, I formulated a prescription to nourish Blood and Qi, straightening the fetal ligaments so they lift themselves without dropping, allowing the fetus to settle safely. The prescription consists of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) including both body and tail, Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi) with white pith, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata (Zhi Gancao), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), and Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang). Decoct strongly in water, administer four doses. By dawn the next day, combine the dregs of these four doses into one decoction, force the patient to drink it all at once, and induce vomiting by probing the throat. After profuse urination and the discharge of black fluid, add Arecae Semen (Dafupi), Aurantii Fructus (Zhiqiao), Allii Fistulosi Folium (Qingcong Ye), and Amomi Fructus Rotundus (Suaren) to the original formula, and give twenty doses to prevent deficiency before and after delivery. Indeed, she delivered safely and remained healthy postpartum.
Another pregnant woman suffered from Zhuanbao. Both pulses were choppy (Se); upon heavy pressure, they became wiry (Xian), while the left was slightly harmonious. This resulted from worry and anger. Choppy indicates deficient Blood and excess Qi; wiry indicates fluid retention. Deficient Blood makes the fetus weak and unable to lift itself; excess Qi with fluid retention causes unclear and narrow middle Jiao, leading the fetus to seek lower positions and descend. Thus, it tends to drop. Use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Sheng Gancao), and Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang). Decoct and take on an empty stomach, then immediately probe the throat to expel the medicinal juice. Wait until Qi stabilizes, then administer another dose. Do the same the next morning. By the eighth dose, the condition stabilized. This method may not be universally applicable, but subsequent cases treated similarly were also effective. The exact reason remains unknown.
