Tao (24 years old) experienced epistaxis due to the ascending of Yang Qi. A method for cooling and resolving Lung and Stomach heat was proposed.
Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao), Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao), Scrophularia Root (Yuanshen), Rehmannia Root prepared with wine (Xi Shengdi), Achyranthes Root stir-fried with bran (Chao Niuxi), Gardenia Fruit charred black (Hei Shanzhi), Moutan Bark (Danpi), Platycodon Leaf stir-fried and charred (Chao Hei Cebaiye).
Cao (28 years old) had his epistaxis stopped. His complexion was pale and lacked spirit. The pulse was fine, and his voice was hoarse. After blood loss, it is feared that Qi has nowhere to return to. How can preserving Yang Qi not be the primary task?

Dai: Hemoptysis with blood stasis has just cleared. The Yin fluids of the Lung and Stomach are not yet sufficient. It coincides with the arrival of dryness in the weather. Yang Qi easily fluctuates again. The clear orifices fail to perform their descending function. Epistaxis recurs as a result. The pulse at the Right Cun and Guan positions is bounding, rapid, and large.
This is a sign of stimulation by Yangming dryness. A method of moistening, clearing, benefiting Yin, and肃 (descending/clearing) the Upper Jiao is proposed, pending review.
Raw Rehmannia Root (Yuanshengdi, 4 qian), Selected Ophiopogon Tuber (Jian Maidong, 1.5 qian), Achyranthes Root charred (Huai Niuxitan), Plastrum Testudinis stir-fried with wine (Guifuban Jiuzhi, 5 qian), Aged Donkey-hide Gelatin (Chen Ejiao, 2 qian), Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao), Bean Peel (Doubi, 1.5 qian), True Fritillaria Bulb peeled and ground (Zhen Chuanbei Quxin Yan, 2 qian), Platycodon Leaf stir-fried and charred (Chaohei Cebaiye, 1.5 qian).
Second visit: The Left pulse is harmonious and quiet; the bounding force on the Right has decreased. Epistaxis gradually stops. Dry mouth. The purple stagnation in complexion has receded. All movements tend towards Fire which easily joins Dryness. A method of benefiting Yin and subduing Yang is proposed, assisted by clearing Yangming dryness-heat.
