Women's milk is derived from the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel). If a primipara has no milk, it should be unblocked. If a multipara still has no milk after several deliveries, this is due to the depletion of body fluids (Jin Ye), and nourishing and tonifying medicines are required. If there is milk but the volume is insufficient, medicines that promote the circulation of meridians can be taken to stimulate secretion, accompanied by broth to guide the flow, with strengthening the Spleen and Stomach as the primary therapeutic principle.
Loulu San (Thesium Powder)
Treats qi and blood stagnation in postpartum women, resulting in galactorrhea obstruction and meridian condensation, causing breast distension and pain, or even abscess formation; natural internal resolution occurs upon administration.
Loulu (Thesium chinense, 2.5 liang) Shetui (Ophichthidae skin, 10 strips, roasted) Gualou (Trichosanthes fruit, 10 pieces, rapidly burned until charred but retaining efficacy)
Grind the above into powder, mix with warm wine, and take 2-3 qian at any time. Immediately after taking the medicine, consume pork trotter broth.
Yongquan San (Surging Spring Powder)
Treats complete absence of milk, and also treats breast nodules and abscesses.
Shanjiapia (Pangolin scales, washed, 1 liang, fried in ash until dry)
Grind into fine powder, mix with wine, and take 2 qian.
Yulu San (Jade Dew Powder)
Treats blocked milk vessels, high fever, dizziness, and vertigo.
Chuanxiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong) Jiegeng (Platycodon root) Baizhi (Angelica dahurica, each 2 qian) Shaoyao (Peony root) Danggui (Angelica sinensis, each 1.5 qian) Renshen (Ginseng root) Baifuling (Poria sclerotium, Gancao (Licorice root, each 1 qian)
Combine as one dose, decoct with two bowls of water until one bowl remains.
Luo Shi Yongquan San (Dr. Luo's Surging Spring Powder)
Treats postpartum galactorrhea due to stagnant qi.
Qumaisui (Seed head of Dianthus superbus) Maidong (Ophiopogon tuber) Longgu (Fossilized bones/shells) Shanjiapia (Pangolin scales, processed until yellow) Wangbuliuxing (Vaccaria seeds, equal parts)
Grind into fine powder, take 2 qian per dose, mixed with hot wine. Afterwards, drink half a small bowl of pork trotter broth. Use a wooden comb to comb the left and right breasts more than thirty times each.
This formula treats mastitis: if not ruptured, it dissipates; if condensed, it ulcerates; if extremely painful, it stops. "Blown milk" results from infants blowing on the breast; swelling before delivery is called "internal blowing." Both are treated.
Chenpi (Aged tangerine peel, white part removed, dried, stir-fried with flour until yellow and ground) Shexiang (Musk, 2 fen)
Grind together, mix with wine, and take orally.
Milk should not be allowed to accumulate; if foul fluids are not expelled, they will congeal into pus. Furthermore, milk should not be spilled on the ground, as ants consuming it may cause lactation failure in humans. It is best to spill it on the east-facing wall.
Formula for treating breast swelling about to form an abscess:
Apply horse urine to the area; it heals after several applications.
Formula for treating postpartum breast congestion and swelling that does not subside, causing residual milk to recede naturally:
Gualou (Trichosanthes fruit, one piece, half raw, half stir-fried) Dafengcao (Large licorice root, one cun, half raw, half honey-roasted) Shengjiang (Fresh ginger, one piece, half raw, half baked)
Crush the above ingredients together, decoct with one bowl of wine until one cup remains, strain, and drink. When the pain becomes unbearable for a moment, express the residual milk. Take another dose before sleep, lying on the affected side with the breast against the bed, to facilitate the action of the medicine.
Another Formula
Treats postpartum women with abundant qi and blood, or those without an infant to suckle, resulting in breast distension and pain, aversion to cold, and fever. Use 2-3 liang of fried malt, decoct in water and take orally; symptoms resolve immediately. Its ability to dissipate qi and blood is so potent; therefore, why use it extensively in cases of Spleen and Stomach weakness and indigestion?
