To resolve and benefit from *Lianggan Shanghan* (Double-Contracted Cold Damage), the medical classics state: "Double-contracted cases are generally incurable." However, individuals vary in their constitutional strength (deficiency or excess) and the depth of pathogenic invasion. If constitution is robust and invasion is superficial, recovery is occasionally possible. Cases where treatment fails to save the patient do exist. Conversely, cases recovering without treatment are rare, with perhaps one or two out of ten surviving.

Treats epidemic diseases (Shiyi Bing), initially presenting with aversion to cold and heaviness of the body, subsequently progressing to severe swelling of the head and face, inability to open the eyes, upper respiratory distress, throat obstruction, dry tongue, and dry mouth. Commonly known as "Da Tou Tian Xing" (Big Head Epidemic). Relatives avoid visiting each other; infections often prove fatal. The Master stated: The upper half of the body corresponds to Heaven Qi, and the lower half to Earth Qi. This pathogenic heat lodges between the Heart and Lung, attacking upward to cause severe swelling of the head and eyes. Therefore, the prescription uses Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), which are bitter and cold, to clear heat from the Heart and Lung as Sovereign herbs; Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum) is bitter and neutral, Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) is bitter and cold, and Sheng Gancao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) is sweet and cold, to purge fire and tonify Qi as Minister herbs; Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus), and Bohe Ye (Menthae Haplocalycis Folium) are bitter, pungent, and neutral; Banlangen (Isatidis Radix) is bitter and cold; Mabo (Fomes Officinalis) and Bai Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) are bitter and neutral, to move the stagnant Qi of the Shaoyang and Yangming meridians; Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) is pungent and warm, acting as a boat and oar to prevent downward descent. Grind all into fine powder. Half is taken as a powder mixed with water, administered frequently; the other half is made into honey pills for sucking.
