To treat Spleen Malaria (Pi Nue) presenting with a wiry and rapid pulse, where heat predominates over cold, accompanied by bitter taste in the mouth, hot sensation in the throat, and scanty, dark, and difficult urination.
Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel), Houpo (Magnolia Bark) (each 0.7 fen), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Fuling (Poria) (each 1 qian), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) (1.2 qian), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root) (1.5 qian), Caoguo (Tsaoko Fruit) (0.7 fen), Gancao (Licorice Root) (0.5 fen). If the patient has sweating, use Baizhu and Fuling as the sovereign drugs. If heat is prominent, increase the dosage of Huangqin and Chaihu; if cold is prominent, increase the dosage of Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) and Caoguo; if thirst is present, add Zhimu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber), and Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root). Take two zhong of water, three slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), and decoct.
This formula is most effective for treating malaria where heat predominates over cold. It can also be used to treat malaria with alternating chills and fever, accompanied by stuffiness and fullness in the chest and diaphragm, loss of appetite, and dizziness of the head and eyes.
Renshen (Ginseng Root), Chaihu, Huangqin, Banxia, Gancao, Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome), Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Houpo, Chuanxiong (Szechwan Lovage Rhizome), Caoguo (each equal proportion).
To treat chronic malaria or deficiency-type malaria, which may occur every other day or every three to five days, characterized by more cold than heat.
Renshen (1 qian), Banxia (8 fen), Chenpi (8 fen), Gancao (0.5 fen), Fuling (8 fen), Huoxiang (Patchouli Herb), Houpo (1 qian).
Take four liang of Shengjiang, crush to extract juice, and leave exposed overnight. On the next morning, take two Jujubes (Ziziphus Jujuba Fruit) and one Wumei (Mume Fruit), decoct with water, add the extracted ginger juice, and take warm.
To treat individuals with underlying deficiency who suffer from internal injury due to overwork, complicated by exposure to cold and summer-heat, resulting in malaria with alternating chills and fever and limb fatigue.
Huangqi (Astragalus Root) (1 qian), Banxia, Shaoyao (Peony Root), Renshen, Baizhu, Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root) (each 8 fen), Gancao (0.5 fen), Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome) (3 fen), Chaihu (1 qian), Chenpi (0.7 fen). If there is sweating and severe cold, add Guixiang (Agarwood/Cinnamon Twig variant depending on context, here likely referring to aromatic warming herbs like Rougui or specific local usage, but literally Gui Xiang); if heat is excessive, double the dosage of Chaihu and Huangqin; if thirsty, add Maimendong and Tianhuafen. The above constitutes one dose. Take two zhong of water, three slices of Shengjiang, and decoct.
On the noon hour (Wu Shi) of the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, collect single-clove garlic in any quantity, crush it into a paste, add Huandan (Lead Monoxide), and pound until uniform. Roll into pills the size of a longan seed.
However, after the malaria has been occurring for two to three days, on the morning of the next attack at the time of rooster crow (Ji Ming), crush one pill, and administer with Jinghua Shui (first drawn well water in the morning) facing east.
