One qian of high-quality *Zhusha* (Cinnabaris), processed by water flotation method, formed into pills the size of a longan seed using jujube pulp. On the day of onset, take it at wugeng time with wine as a vehicle. It can resolve phlegm and eliminate accumulations, preventing malaria from ever recurring.
Treating malaria caused by deficiency of qi in the five zang organs, irregular emotions of joy and anger, leading to mutual overcoming of yin and yang, condensation of fluid retention (phlegm-fluids), which combats with *Weiqi* (Defensive Qi), resulting in malaria.
*Renshen* (Ginseng Radix), *Baizhu* (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), *Fuling* (Poria), *Juhong* (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum), *Caoguoren* (Tsaokos Fructus), *Banxia* (Pinelliae Rhizoma), *Zaozi* (Jujubae Fructus), *Shengjiang* (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), *Wumei* (Mume Fructus) (each 1 qian), *Gancao* (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (0.5 qian).
The above herbs are marinated with a little salt for consumption. They must be wrapped in thick paper, moistened with water, slow-roasted until fragrant and cooked, then dried. Each dose is half liang, decocted with two zhong of water until reduced to six-tenths. Take several doses consecutively before the onset of symptoms.
Edema syndromes are categorized into Yin and Yang types. Examination requires detailed observation of pulse, complexion, and inquiry into symptoms. Yin type presents with deep and slow pulse, bluish-white complexion, no thirst accompanied by diarrhea, and clear or scanty urine.
If the pulse is deep and rapid, complexion is red-yellow, stool is dry and dark, urine is red and scanty, accompanied by thirst, it is Yang type. Additionally, generalized skin swelling that is shiny like blisters, where pressing leaves an indentation that fills back up upon lifting the hand, indicates edema. This is due to Spleen deficiency failing to control water, causing water to flood and act recklessly. The treatment method should tonify Spleen qi, so that when Spleen qi becomes solid, its transportation function naturally strengthens; purgative methods must strictly be avoided. Avoid eating mutton. Swelling above the waist is suitable for diaphoresis (sweating method); swelling below the waist is suitable for promoting urination.
Treatment Formula:
*Chenpi* (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), *Banxia* (Pinelliae Rhizoma), *Fuling* (Poria) (each 1 qian), *Gancao* (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (stir-fried with honey, 0.3 qian), *Renshen* (Ginseng Radix), *Baizhu* (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), *Cangzhu* (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (each 1 qian), *Maidong* (Ophiopogonis Radix) (0.5 qian), *Shanzhi* (Gardeniae Fructus) (0.5 qian), *Zhuling* (Polyporus), *Zexie* (Alismatis Rhizoma) (each 0.5 qian). If abdominal distension is present, add a small amount of *Houpo* (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex). If qi movement is stagnant, add *Muxiang* (Aucklandiae Radix) and *Mutong* (Akebiae Caulis). In summer, add *Xiangru* (Elsholtziae Herba); if qi sinks, add *Shengma* (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) and *Chaihu* (Bupleuri Radix). If heat signs are present, add *Huangqin* (Scutellariae Radix). For postpartum cases, the primary treatment must be major tonification of qi and blood, with slight additions of *Cangzhu* (Atractylodis Rhizoma) and *Fuling* (Poria). For female pregnancy-related edema:
Decoct the above herbs with two zhong of water and three slices of *Shengjiang* (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens).
