Treatment for infantile chickenpox (shuidou).
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) [remove nodes], Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, 大黄) [stir-baked with bran or sand until surface is dark brown], Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu, 知母), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo, 羌活), Lepidii Fructus (Tinglizi, 葶苈子) [stir-fried between papers], Ginseng Radix (Renshen, 人参) [each 1 fen], Talcum (Huashi, 滑石), Phellodendri Cortex (Digupi, 地骨皮), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) [each 0.5 fen]. Take half qian or one qian per dose, add one zhong of water and seven grains of Tritici Semen (Xiaomai, 小麦), decoct and administer.
Before the eruption of smallpox/rubella (douzhen, 痘疹) in infants, it is advisable to massage the middle of the infant's back with hands dipped in oil. This can result in sparse eruptions, pre-emptively resolve fetal toxins (taidu, 胎毒), or prevent eruptions altogether.
To disperse heat-toxins (redu, 热毒) so that eruptions do not become too severe; taking this beforehand prevents eruptions or results in sparse ones.
Vigna umbellata Seed (Chixiaodou, 赤小豆), Phaseoli Vulgaris Seed (Heidou, 黑豆), Sojae Semen Viride (Lvdou, 绿豆) [each 0.5 sheng], Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) [roasted, 1 liang].
Cook all ingredients together until properly done, and give the juice and beans to the infant.
Pre-emptively resolve fetal toxins (taidu, 胎毒) so that eruptions do not become too severe. Roast Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), grind into powder, take half qian mixed with liquid twice or three times daily.
For treating early-stage eruptions, apply this medicine to the face first. If applied too early, eruptions will not appear on the face; if applied too late, even if they appear, they will be sparse.
Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai, 黄柏) [1 liang], Sojae Semen Viride (Lvdou, 绿豆) [4 liang], Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) [raw, 4 liang].
Grind the above into powder, mix with clear sesame oil to form a paste, and apply to the face three to five times daily. Yang Shi added Carthami Flos (Honghua, 红花); Dong Shi used Sojae Semen Viride Powder.
When eruptions are actively emerging but are suppressed by cold weather, and internally injured by milk/food, causing qi and blood stagnation, disharmony of Ying and Wei (nutritive and defensive levels), and toxic vapors rebounding outward:
Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 陈皮), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Noupu, 厚朴) [processed with ginger], Pogostemonis Herba (Huoxiangye, 藿香叶), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia, 半夏) [stir-fried with ginger], Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草). Add Saellae Radix (Zicao, 紫草) and Glutinis Oryzae Semen (Nuomi, 糯米) for decoction.
Take three qian per dose, with three slices of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜) and two Jujubae Fructus (Zao, 大枣), decoct together and administer.
When eruptions have emerged but are not fully developed, failing to rise and lacking ruddy color:
Use four liang of Coriandri Fructus (Huxu, 胡荽 - note: text says Huxu leaf/stalk contextually often refers to Coriander herb/fruits depending on era, here likely Coriandri Herba/Fructus), chop finely, add two zhongs of good wine, boil twice, add Huxu again and boil. Cover tightly, wait until warm, inhale one or two mouthfuls at a time...
For infantile eruptions where the toxin root is internal, or due to qi deficiency, or wind-pathogens and foul toxins clashing, causing toxin depression inward, latent and unable to emerge, or slow emergence: this medicine invigorates blood, regulates qi, harmonizes stomach, tonifies deficiency, and internally supports the toxin to ensure full emergence, facilitating easy resolution and crusting.
Ginseng Radix (Renshen, 人参), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归), Astragali Membranacei Radix (Huangqi, 黄芪) [each 2 liang], Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 川芎), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng, 桔梗), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi, 白芷) [not roasted], Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) [raw], Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Noupu, 厚朴) [processed with ginger].
