(Also known as Huangyun Gao, and alternatively referred to as Xian Gao.) It is used for cases where cold and heat symptoms are indistinct; it can be taken with tea or wine according to the specific condition.
Broussonetiae Cortex (Cortex Broussonetiae, 5 liang, stir-fried. Also named Hongrou, or Neixiao) Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis, 3 liang, stir-fried, excluding the root joints) Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Radix Paeoniae Rubra, 2 liang, stir-fried) Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae, 1 liang, avoid fire roasting) Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii, also known as Wangjianxiao or Yangchunxue; effective when added or subtracted according to syndrome, which is Shi Changpu).
The above five ingredients are all ground into fine powder. Detailed usage methods are described below.
Generally speaking, carbuncles, sores, flowing deposits (Liuzhu), and other miscellaneous diseases are all formed by the stagnation of Qi and Blood. When encountering warmth, vitality arises; when encountering cold, vitality dies. With vitality, they dissipate; without vitality, they coagulate. This medicine is warm and neutral. Broussonetiae Cortex is the essence of Wood; it can break Qi, expel Blood, and reduce swelling. Angelicae Pubescentis Radix is the essence of Earth; it can dispel Wind, move Blood, guide Qi, extract poison from bones, remove Bi-syndrome dampness, and further cooperate with Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma to break hard stoneswelling. Paeoniae Radix Rubra is the essence of Fire; it slightly generates Blood, stops pain, and dispels Wind. Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma is the essence of Water; it generates Blood, stops pain, reduces swelling, breaks Wind, and dissipates Blood. Angelicae Dahuricae Radix is the essence of Metal; it dispels Wind, generates flesh, and stops pain. When Blood is generated, life is not lost; when Blood moves, it flows smoothly; when flesh grows, it does not rot; when pain stops, redness and swelling do not flare up; when Wind is removed, Blood naturally dissipates; when Qi is broken, hardness can be resolved, and poison naturally scatters. The five herbs attack together; how could the disease not heal?
First, there are three syndromes in diseases, and correspondingly three treatment methods. If the disease is extremely hot, double the dosage of Broussonetiae Cortex and Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma in this formula, and use less of the other three ingredients. It can still dissipate the condition, but the effect will be slower. If the disease is extremely cold, slightly increase the dosage of Paeoniae Radix Rubra and Angelicae Pubescentis Radix in this formula. It can also invigorate Blood and dissipate the condition, with a slightly slower effect, but it will not worsen the disease.
Second, if the heat pathogen is flourishing, do not mix the medicine with wine. Instead, soak green onions in water, mix the medicine with this decoction, and apply it with hot compresses on the affected area, because green onions can also disperse Qi. Blood moves when heated, hence the use of hot compresses. If the condition subsides slightly, switch to mixing the medicine with wine. Wine generates Blood; when encountering heat, Blood becomes more abundant. Wine also promotes Blood circulation; when encountering warmth, Blood flow increases.
Third, if blood blisters form small sores on the wound surface, do not use Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, as its sticky nature may cause pain when removing the dressing. It is advisable to first apply the other four ingredients, then cover with Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma on top, covering the surrounding area to intercept the blood supply attacking the lesion. All applications require hot compresses. If dry, moisten again with the original decoction to allow the medicinal properties to act through steam and moisture, causing the disease to recede.
Fourth, if after using the main formula, the black halo around the four sides does not fade, and the sore mouth lacks color, it indicates that the patient previously overused cold medicines. Do not immediately use Yulong Gao, as the muscle tissue has not yet necrosed. Fear that the drug potency is too strong and adds to the pain. It is appropriate to add Cinnamomi Cortex (Cortex Cinnamomi) and Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) to this formula to awaken stagnant Blood. Naturally, the black halo will fade, and efficacy will appear. Once Blood return is achieved, remove the added herbs and rely solely on the main formula for results.
Fifth, if pain persists despite using the main formula, dissolve Frankincense (Resina Olibanum) and Myrrh (Resina Myrrhae) in wine, melt them over fire, then use this wine to mix the medicine and apply it hot to stop the pain.
Sixth, for flowing deposits causing tendon stiffness, add Frankincense (Resina Olibanum) to this formula for external application. Its property can extend tendons.
Seventh, if red flesh protrudes from the sore opening, there are three causes: one is exposure to water, two is exposure to wind, and three is prolapse after incision. Use this formula with a small amount of Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparatum) to dispel wind, mixed with ginger juice and wine. If it does not subside, it is likely due to quacks pressing out large pus cores excessively and cooling the skin with cold medicines. If hot medicines are administered, it will lead to further ulceration. There is a mnemonic for this: use Alum (Alumen) and Calcined Mirabilite (Natrii Sulfas Exsiccatus) ground into powder for external application. Internally, take Rongwei Jia Duijin Yin, and externally apply Chonghe Gao.
Eighth, if the disease trend is hot and flourishing, do not immediately use cold medicines. Heat flourishing causes Qi and Blood congestion; excessive cold fails to clear the Blood thoroughly and causes coagulation due to cold. Therefore, use a mixture of warm and cold properties. Blood moves when warmed and disperses when mixed with cold. This formula can be combined with Hongbao Dan, mixed with green onion decoction for topical application.
Ninth, this formula is the premier remedy for back carbuncles and flowing deposits. Practitioners should master flexible application, ensuring interior and exterior correspondence, bringing the disease under control. For severe back carbuncles, life hangs in the balance; only this medicine offers stable and reliable efficacy throughout the course, without deterioration. For mild cases, folk healers may achieve results, but there is a risk of complications. This is because conditions originating in the Yin aspect are beyond the scope of folk healers. Only this formula treats both Yin and Yang, achieving miraculous results akin to creation itself. Regarding flowing deposits, although not fatal, nine out of ten result in disability. Chronic disability often leads to death. Even if cured by a physician, it takes half a year to a year to see effects. This is rare, and the patient remains weak. Our school's immortal formula is unique and fast-acting, infallible, with life-restoring power, beyond words. Flowing deposits are residual toxins from Cold Damage (Shanghan). If the exterior syndrome is unresolved, residual toxins lodge in the meridians, causing uneven Qi and Blood, resulting in Hot Flowing Deposit. These are curable. Hot cases are rare; most are due to excessive sweating leading to Qi and Blood deficiency. Residual toxins enter the interstices, becoming Cold Flowing Deposits depending on pore density. These are difficult to cure. Cold cases are common. Thus, unresolved exterior syndromes in Cold Damage are not just hot syndromes; residual toxins often manifest as cold syndromes, rooted in Kidney Deficiency, leading to bone abscesses. Cold causes Qi stagnation and Blood accumulation, resulting in swelling without suppuration. If physicians use cold formulas, it exacerbates the cold, leading to Yin death within Yin, tissue necrosis, and toxin adhering to bones, forming bone abscesses and disabilities. Thus, bone abscess is the deteriorated stage of flowing deposits. Bone abscess is not the fault of flowing deposits but the error of physicians using cold formulas. "Liu" means movement; "Zhu" means stopping. Qi moves but stagnates, causing Blood to pool and coagulate. Qi is Yang, Blood is Yin. Yang movement follows Yin; Qi transport drives Blood flow. I can relocate flowing deposits to dissipate them by utilizing their mobile nature. Movement allows relocation. Since Yang moves, how can Yin stay alone? Hence, Angelicae Pubescentis Radix guides the process by agitating Qi and Blood. Once guided and moved, Yin-Yang harmonizes, preventing suppuration and allowing dispersion at the new site.
Tenth, for flowing deposits in critical areas like the back, shoulders, waist, and legs, apply this formula thickly. Separately, use Angelicae Pubescentis Radix powder mixed with wine applied along a line, ending with Yulong Gao to induce migration. This is the relocation method. It directs Qi and Blood to non-critical areas to form pus or dissipate. If pus forms and cannot be drained, urgently use this medicine to extract toxins, preventing bone abscess. If quacks used cold medicines or unnecessary surgery causing bone abscess, drugs alone cannot cure it; healing requires complete expulsion of necrotic bone. If hesitant to use surgery, use Yulong Gao. Treatment details follow. If major bone fragments cannot be treated, minor ones can be managed.
Another formula uses Angelicae Dahuricae Radix and Broussonetiae Cortex mixed with wine to resolve early-stage carbuncles internally, named Yisheng Gao. Another formula uses Paeoniae Radix Rubra, Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, and Broussonetiae Cortex as a binding paste, named Sansheng Gao.
Another formula treats accidental tongue severance in adults or children where the tongue hangs but is not fully detached. Wrap the tongue in soft chicken egg white membrane, apply Posangujie San (Broken Blood Powder) mixed with honey to the root to stop bleeding, then mix the main formula with honey and beeswax to an appropriate consistency, apply onto the egg white membrane, and place on the tongue. The membrane is thin and flexible, facilitating drug penetration. Reapply frequently if dissolved in the mouth. After three days, the tongue reconnects, and the membrane can be removed. Continue applying honey-wax mixed medicine frequently. Full recovery occurs in seven days. Observing this, practitioners learn that flexibility and ingenuity are key, not merely relying on the teacher. If no rapid effect, combine with Jinchuang Yao (Golden Wound Medicine) for superior results.
Eleventh, for un-suppurated swellings, do not apply Hongbao Dan to the head, as cold medicines may freeze Blood, preventing suppuration and causing tissue rot. Use this formula instead. If it does not subside and suppuration is desired, apply Yulong Gao to the head to dry it. Then apply this formula beneath Yulong Gao, and surround with Hongbao Dan to cut off fresh blood supply. If the condition was not severely frozen by previous cold medicines, skip this formula under Yulong Gao and simply surround with Hongbao Dan.
Twelfth, for treating deteriorated conditions where Yulong Gao is unsuitable, this formula is naturally safe and prevents patient suffering.
Thirteenth, for early-stage back carbuncles not yet formed, use Broussonetiae Cortex powder mixed with wine to bind the area, keeping it tight. Internally, take Zhamu Yinzi (Oak Branch Drink), a good remedy for the poor.
Fourteenth, adding two-thirds Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum and Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Caoshu) to this formula, mixed with hot wine, allows various carbuncles to suppurate without pain. Using Yulong Gao alone requires surrounding with Hongbao Dan; this combination is excellent.
Fifteenth, for dog bites, apply Zijiao Shatang (Purple Sugar) mixed with water to the wound, use Jindan to reduce swelling, and chew Almond seeds to detoxify. Alternatively, mix Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum and Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata with this formula (half dose each), apply with hot wine to treat chronic injuries, highly effective.
Sixteenth, for pediatric joint laxity, apply this formula with Junjiang (Military Ginger) mixed with wine. For initial onset, apply with wine until suppuration, then stop. At the very beginning, applying Broussonetiae Cortex and Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma with wine ensures resolution; do not use Hongbao Dan.
Seventeenth, Ju (Deep Abscess) is caused by Heart Fire and Toxic Heat. It appears on the Five Centers (palms, soles, chest), with unbearable pain, resembling blister-like sores with red blood. Though small externally, toxic heat resides in the Heart. Cases involving the torso are difficult to treat; those on hands and feet are curable. Early treatment is crucial; delay leads to pulverized necrotic tissue, incurable even by immortals. For hand involvement, apply Hongbao Dan around the palm to block blood flow, then use Chonghe Gao on the palm center to conclude treatment. For foot involvement, apply Hongbao Dan on the sole; around the ankle joint (Jiaogu), apply Chonghe Gao similarly.
