Crush the herbs, add three sheng of water, boil to two sheng, then add Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), and decoct again to one and a half sheng. Strain the dregs, and take warm, one zhan after meals. For those with intense heat, add Banxiaosha (Natrii Sulfas) half liang; add it after the decoction is ready, stir well until dissolved, and take. If not cured, prepare another dose; up to five or seven doses may be used.
Another prescription: Diyan Tang (Eye-Dropping Decoction) (Not suitable for patients with variola).
Qinpi (Fraxini Cortex), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (each half liang).
Finely chop, add two sheng of water, decoct to one sheng. Wrap in cotton cloth around the tip of a chopstick, dip into the decoction, and drip into the eyes. Use frequently.
For sores in the lower part, use Xionghuang San (Realgar Powder).
Xionghuang (Realgar), Qingxiangzi (Celosiae Semen), Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (each three qian), Taoren (Persicae Semen) (one qian).
Grind into powder, mix with Aiye juice (Artemisia argyi juice) to form pills the size of a jujube pit. Wrap in cotton cloth and insert into the lower part; if there is accumulated pus, it is better. In winter when mugwort is unavailable, decoct mugwort thickly, mix to form pills, and additionally take two qian mixed with rice drink, taken warm, twice daily.
To treat sores, use Qingdai Wan (Indigo Naturalis Pill).
Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (equal parts).
Grind into fine powder, mix with Ganding (a type of gum/resin) to form pills the size of a jujube pit. If there are sores in the mouth, hold in the mouth and swallow the juice; if there are sores in the lower part, wrap in cotton cloth and insert into the lower part. Hold and dissolve fifty to sixty pills daily until cured.
Qianma Wan treats epidemic diseases (Shixing Bing) after four or five days, where sores appear in the lower part, which physicians cannot cure. This prescription is indicated.
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (one qian), Lilü (Veratri Rhizoma), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Badou (Crotonis Fructus) (each half liang, remove skin and heart, stir-fry until black).
Grind into fine powder. Grind Badou separately, add honey, and pound to form pills the size of a tung tree seed. Take two pills on an empty stomach with warm water; if ineffective, increase to three pills. If heat is stuck above the diaphragm and does not descend, drink half a sheng of hot water to induce vomiting. The lower sores will heal spontaneously. This is highly effective.
For epidemic aphthous ulcers, use Huangbai Shengma Tang.
Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma - raw) (each half liang).
Chop, add one and a half sheng of water, decoct to half a sheng. Add Dihuang Zhi (Rehmanniae Juice) one he, decoct to half a sheng. Divide into two doses, sip slowly.
Another prescription: Qiangwei Yinzi.
Qiangwei Jingye (Stems and Leaves of Rosa multiflora) chopped one sheng (use root bark in winter).
Add three sheng of water, decoct to half a sheng. Rinse the mouth warmly to remove saliva. If there are sores in the throat, swallowing a small amount of the juice is best.
Another prescription: Huangbai Yinzi.
Slice Huangbai thinly, soak in honey overnight. Chew the bark and juice, and apply to the sores.
Another prescription: Wubeizi San.
Stir-fry Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis), grind into powder, and apply to the affected area. When saliva flows out, spit it away. Continue until cured.
In Shanghan (Cold Damage), sore throat with blockage and inability to swallow, use Shayegan Decoction.
Raw Shayean (Belamcandae Rhizoma), Zhuzhi (Porcine Fat) (each half jin).
Decoct together until Shayean turns slightly charred. Strain, take a piece the size of a large date, wrap in cotton cloth, hold in the mouth, and slowly swallow.
To treat sore throat and blockage, use Pengsha San (Borax Powder).
Pengsha (Borax), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), Yanxiao (Natrii Sulfas Exsiccatus), Baifan (Alumen), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Xionghuang (Realgar) (each one qian), Sha (Sandarac? Note: likely refers to a specific mineral or typo in source, kept as Sha), Caowutou Jian (Tip of Aconitum carmichaelii lateral root) (four tips).
Grind into fine powder, mix with one qian using rice drink, and sip slowly.
Ancient prescription Heilong Jian (Black Dragon Decoction) treats nine types of throat swelling and pain.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (half liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (one liang), Wuhui Jiu (Pure Wine) (one sheng), [Missing Character] Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina) (forty strips).
Add three dou of water, soak Zaojiao overnight. Decoct in a clean pot until water volume is halved. Then add Renshen and Gancao, finely cut, and decoct together until two-thirds is consumed. Strain through cloth, add wine, and put one and a half spoonsful of Fu Mei (soot from the bottom of the cauldron) into the vessel. Stir and decoct until it resembles thin maltose. Store in a porcelain jar, buried underground overnight. When needed, take a pill the size of a chicken head, dissolve it in a cup with warm wine. First rinse the mouth with water, then use a goose feather to apply the medicine to sweep the throat. If foul phlegm comes out naturally or goes down to the abdomen, repeat two or three times. After the medication course ends, wait a while and induce vomiting. After all foul matter is expelled, eat a little steamed cake soaked in water and soft porridge to settle the stomach. Then hold one cun of Gancao in the mouth and swallow the juice. Avoid roasted flatbread, pickled pork, etc. If there is "wooden tongue" (swollen stiff tongue) making application difficult, press the tongue down with a spoon and sweep the throat with the medicine.
The nine names are: Ji Hou Bi (Acute Throat Closure), Chan Hou Feng (Entangling Throat Wind), Jie Hou (Knotted Throat), Lan Hou (Rotting Throat), Chong She (Double Tongue), Mu She (Wooden Tongue), Dun Chong (Escaping Worm), [Missing Character] Die, Fei Si Ru Hou (Flying Thread Entering Throat).
In the fifth year of Yuan [Missing Era Name], from spring to autumn, people in Qizhou and Huangzhou suffered from acute throat closure, with eight or nine deaths out of ten. The fastest death occurred within half a day or one day. Pan Chuanguan, a judicial officer in Huangzhou, lost several relatives. Later, he obtained Heilong Gao (Black Dragon Ointment) and saved dozens of people.
Pang Anshi said: In emergencies, we do not wait to prepare this ointment. We use ancient prescriptions and adjust by judgment. Obtain one or two strips of [Missing Character] Zaojiao, crush them, add three and a half sheng of water, soak for a short time, knead to extract juice, and strain. Add one qian of Gancao and one qian of Renshen, decoct into a thin paste, ensuring it is not too thick. Then add the following medicines:
Baixian Yan (White Salt from Frost Plum), Sha (Sandarac?), Yanxiao (Natrii Sulfas Exsiccatus) (equal parts).
Grind these three raw materials. Mix with the previous paste in appropriate proportions. The consistency should allow for sweeping application. Use a goose feather to apply a small amount to the throat as before; this is very effective. The nursing care follows the same method. This ointment acts even faster. If the ointment dries out over time, dissolve it with Gancao water. After recovery, if sores appear outside the chest and throat, do not worry. If salted plums are unavailable, use white salt instead.
For epidemic hand and foot swelling with severe pain threatening detachment, decoct Huzhang (Polygoni Cuspidati Rhizoma et Radix) thickly and soak the affected areas.
After epidemic disease, toxic vapors cause hand and foot swelling and pain threatening detachment, inevitably leading to abscesses and pus. Use Shengma Dahuang Tang.
Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Bailian (Ampelopsis Radix) (each three qian), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (each one liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (half liang), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (one and a half liang).
Chop, add three sheng of water, decoct to two and a half sheng. Add Dahuang and decoct to one and a half sheng. Take one zhan warm. Stop when diarrhea occurs.
