Yellow disease (Huang Bing) manifests as generalized body pain, fever, and a sallow complexion. After seven to eight days, if heat accumulates in the interior accompanied by blood stasis, purgation should be employed to evacuate the stool resembling liver tissue. (If blood stasis is present, mania is inevitable, and Didang Tang (Cistanche and Rhubarb Decoction) is indicated; if the patient with yellow disease passes blood spontaneously, spontaneous recovery may also occur.) The patient experiences fullness and urgency in the lower abdomen. If the eyes are sore and painful, the nasal bones hurt, the shoulders and neck are stiff, and the waist and back feel tight, these are signs of yellow disease. Stool is difficult to pass; however, as long as urination is unobstructed, death need not be feared. Frequent bowel movements are undesirable, as they lead to abdominal distension and fullness, which is unfavorable. This condition arises from cold-dampness lingering on the exterior, causing heat to accumulate in the Spleen and Stomach. When the pores remain closed, stagnant heat contends with retained food, leading to stagnation and steaming that cannot dissipate, resulting in obstruction of both urination and defecation. Consequently, the body and face turn yellow. A critical sign of yellow disease is the absence of pulse at the Cun Kou (Inch Position) near the palm, combined with cold breath from the mouth and nose; this indicates a fatal prognosis.
Gao Fa Jian (Hair and Fat Ointment) treats various forms of yellow disease.
Ingredients: Human hair (volume equivalent to two chicken eggs), Pig fat (8 liang).
Boil these two ingredients until the hair completely dissolves, grind and strain to remove dregs, and divide into two doses. The pathogen exits via urination. In cases of recurrence, passage of dry feces from the stomach leads to recovery.
Another prescription:
Gua Di (Thladianthi Fructus) - 27 pieces. Add 1 sheng of water, boil until reduced to half a sheng, and take in one dose.
For persistent jaundice with yellowing of the eyes, use Gua Ding San (Melon Seed Powder).
Grind Gua Di into fine powder.
Take a bean-sized amount, place it deep into the nostril, and continue until all yellow fluid discharges.
Sun Simiao stated: Whenever epidemic febrile diseases occur, internal heat often causes yellowing. Simply apply Gua Ding San into the nostrils; once yellow fluid discharges, the patient recovers and will not suffer from yellow disease again. One must carefully monitor the patient's limbs, body, and face for any slight yellowish hue. If detected, administer Gua Ding San immediately without delay; failure to act promptly will result in severe danger. Strictly avoid alcohol, wheat products, and sexual activity; violation of these prohibitions leads to death.
Patients with yellow disease typically experience fever in the late afternoon but paradoxically feel aversion to cold; this is known as Nü Lao Dan (Female Labor Jaundice). It originates from bladder tension, presenting with lower abdominal fullness, generalized yellowing of the body, darkening of the forehead, and heat in the soles of the feet. It progresses to Hei Dan (Black Jaundice), characterized by black stools and abdominal distension resembling water accumulation. If the stool is black and loose, it confirms Nü Lao Dan, distinguishing it from Water Disease (Shui Bing). Abdominal distension in this context is difficult to treat. Use Xiaoshi Fanshi San (Niter and Alum Powder).
Ingredients: Xiaoshi (Natrii Nitras), Fanshi (Alumen).
Grind equal parts of both minerals and sieve them. Mix with barley gruel juice and administer one Fang Cun Bi (square-inch spoonful) per dose, three times daily. Cover the patient with heavy clothing to induce sweating. The disease resolves through urination and defecation; the urine turns normal yellow, and the stool turns normal black. The barley used must be hulled barley. The *Qianjin Fang* notes: Xiaoshi (2 fen), roasted until dry; Fanshi (1 fen), roasted until dry. Hence, this annotation is added.
