(There are cases where pathogenic factors are in the exterior, cases where they have moved to the interior, cases where there is internal accumulation of water-fluids, and cases of Yang deficiency. Crush fresh ginger root, wrap it in cotton cloth, and rub it over the whole body to induce spontaneous sweating.)
Taiyang disease with anhidrosis (absence of sweating) and wheezing. (Indicated: Mahuang Tang [Ephedra Decoction]). Taiyang disease with anhidrosis and irritability. (Indicated: Da Qinglong Tang [Major Blue Green Dragon Decoction]). Yangming disease with anhidrosis, thirst with desire to drink water, and absence of exterior syndrome. (Indicated: Baihu Jia Renshen Tang [White Tiger Decoction plus Ginseng Root]). Shaoyin disease with a deep pulse, fever, and anhidrosis. (Indicated: Mahuang Fuzi Xixin Tang [Ephedra, Aconite, and Asarum Decoction]). Shaoyin disease presenting only with cold extremities and anhidrosis; if forced sweating is applied, it will inevitably disturb the blood, causing bleeding either from the mouth and nose or from the eyes. This condition is named "Lower Jue and Upper Exhaustion" and is fatal. If three large doses of Mahuang Tang are administered and sweating still does not occur, it is fatal; if sweating occurs but does not reach the feet, it is fatal; if the pulse in heat disease is rapid and full yet sweating does not occur, it is fatal.
(Sweating that occurs naturally without the use of diaphoretic treatment indicates Wind-stroke leading to fever and spontaneous sweating, dampness affecting the middle jiao leading to sweating and aversion to wind, or wind-dampness leading to profuse moist sweating. Only Shanghan [Cold Damage] presents with anhidrosis, and when transmitted inward, it represents exterior deficiency, requiring warming therapy. Sweating without aversion to wind and cold indicates interior syndrome, requiring purgation. In Yangming disease, fever with profuse sweating requires urgent purgation. Sweating resembling oil or beads that coagulate and do not flow indicates death. To prevent onset, have the patient sit in a basin of water with their feet exposed, and apply a fine powder made of glutinous rice flour, Longgu [Fossilized Bones], and Muli [Oyster Shell] to the whole body.)
Taiyang Wind-stroke injuring the Wei Qi (Defensive Qi), with a floating and slow pulse and spontaneous sweating. (Indicated: Guizhi Tang [Cinnamon Twig Decoction]). Exterior deficiency with incessant sweating. (Indicated: Huangqi Jianzhong Tang [Astragalus Middle-Warming Decoction]). Taiyang disease due to excessive sweating, resulting in unceasing leakage of sweat and aversion to wind. (Indicated: Guizhi Fuzi Tang [Cinnamon Twig and Aconite Decoction]). Yangming disease with spontaneous sweating, no aversion to wind and cold, but aversion to heat, delirium, thirst, and constipation. (Indicated: Tiaowei Chengqi Tang [Regulating the Stomach and Directing Downward Decoction]). Yangming disease with spontaneous sweating and difficulty in urination, indicating exhaustion of Jin-Ye (Body Fluids); urgent purgation is required. (Indicated: Dachengqi Tang [Major Directing Downward Decoction]). Cold extremities, sweating on the forehead and back of hands, with a deep and thin pulse. (Indicated: Sini Tang [Recovery from Collapse Decoction]). Spontaneous sweating, difficulty in urination, no body heat, cold feet, and a deep pulse. (Indicated: Sini Tang plus Guizhi [Cinnamon Twig], Fuling [Poria], and Baizhu [Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome]). Vomiting and reflux, cold extremities, deep pulse, body pain, and profuse sweating. (Indicated: Renshen Sini Tang [Ginseng Recovery from Collapse Decoction] plus Guizhi and Baizhu).
(Sweating during sleep that stops upon waking is called Daohan [Stealing Sweat]. During sleep, Stomach Qi moves inward, and the Yang Qi of the exterior fails to secure the surface, causing Jin-Ye [Body Fluids] to leak out; upon waking, Qi moves to the exterior, and sweating ceases. In miscellaneous diseases, Daohan is primarily attributed to Yin deficiency; in Shanghan, Daohan indicates pathogenic factors located between the exterior and interior.)
Yangming disease with tidal fever, floating pulse, and Daohan. (Indicated: Huangqin Tang [Scutellaria Decoction]). Combined disease of the Three Yang channels, sweating when closing the eyes, indicating Heat in the Gallbladder. (Indicated: Xiaochaihu Tang [Minor Bupleurum Decoction])
