Gancao (Licorice Root)
Mainly treats Shaoyin disease (disease of the Lesser Yin). If sore throat occurs two to three days after onset: When yin pathogenic factors transmit to the Shaoyin meridian causing sore throat, administer Gancao Tang (Licorice Decoction). If the condition does not improve, administer Jiegeng Tang (Platycodon Decoction).
This is used to harmonize the Qi of the Shaoyin meridian.
(The indications are the same as above.)
Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Gancao (Licorice Root)
Jiegeng is acrid and warm, used to disperse cold; Gancao is sweet and neutral, used to clear heat. The combination of sweet herbs and Jiegeng regulates cold and heat.
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 14 pieces, washed), Ji Zi (Gallicolum Recens, one piece, remove yolk, place white in vinegar)
Mainly treats Shaoyin disease. Injury to the throat, formation of sores, inability to speak, and loss of voice. None of the Six Meridians typically present with sore throat; only in the Shaoyin chapter are there symptoms of throat injury and sore throat. Why? Because the Shaoyin meridian ascends through the liver and diaphragm, enters the lungs, and follows the throat, thus giving rise to these symptoms. Ancient formulas use vinegar-boiled eggs to treat sore throat and aphonia, taking advantage of their sour astringent properties, which is appropriate. However, Banxia is acrid and drying; why is it used? Generally, Shaoyin diseases are mostly cold syndromes. It is used because its acrid nature can disperse. One dispersing and one astringing, thereby achieving the effect of benefiting the throat.
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), Gancao (Licorice Root)
Mainly treats Shaoyin disease with sore throat. Whenever Shaoyin disease is mentioned, it must be accompanied by a faint and fine pulse. From this, we know that sore throat is often due to latent cold residing in the Shaoyin meridian.
The method should be warming and dispersing; this is the reason for using Banxia and Guizhi. Combined with Gancao, it serves to moderate the heat. If sore throat is caused by excess fire in the Lung, one should use Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit), Tingli (Descurainia Seed), Gancao, and Jiegeng, or prick the medial side of the thumb near the nail corner, about the width of a leek leaf, with a three-edged needle until blood flows, which will result in cure.
Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata)
Mainly treats Shaoyin disease with diarrhea and a faint pulse. The Neijing states: "The Kidney dislikes dryness; urgently eat acrid substances to moisten it." The acridity of Congbai unblocks Yang Qi; the acridity of Ganjiang and Fuzi disperses Yin Cold.
