Fuling (Poria), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), Baizhu (Atractodes Rhizome), Gancao (Licorice)
After vomiting or purging, there is fullness and rebellious qi in the epigastrium, qi rushing upward to the chest, dizziness upon rising, and a deep, tight pulse. If sweating is induced at this time, it will disturb the meridians, causing the body to tremble and shake. This pattern is primarily treated with Fuling Guizhi Baizhu Gancao Tang (Poria, Cinnamon Twig, Atractodes Rhizome and Licorice Decoction).
Erroneous use of sweating methods disturbs the exterior meridians and damages Yang Qi. When Yang Qi is deficient on the exterior, it cannot govern the pulses, thus causing the body to tremble and shake. For those with insufficient Yang, sweet substances are used to tonify. Fuling (Poria) and Baizhu (Atractodes Rhizome) generate fluids and benefit Yang. For rebellious internal Qi, pungent substances are used to disperse. Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) and Gancao (Licorice) circulate Yang Qi and disperse rebellious Qi.
Fuling (Poria), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root), Gancao (Licorice), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger)
After sweating or purging, if the disease persists with irritability, this pattern is primarily treated with this formula. Sweating causes exterior Yang Qi deficiency; purging causes interior Yin Qi deficiency. When both Yin and Yang are deficient, irritability arises. Although it states that both Yin and Yang are deficient, only Qi-tonifying herbs are used because Qi-tonifying herbs possess the function of generating Blood.
Fuling (Poria), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), Gancao (Licorice), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger)
Sweating without thirst is primarily treated with this formula. Zhang Zhongjing stated: For sweating accompanied by thirst, Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) is used; for sweating without thirst, Fuling Gancao Tang (Poria, Cinnamon Twig, Licorice and Ginger Decoction) is used. Thirst indicates the Taiyang syndrome transmitting to its root (Taiyin Spleen), so diuresis is employed to wash away heat. Lack of thirst indicates weakness of Exterior Qi, so this formula is given to harmonize Wei Qi (Defensive Qi).
Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit), Xiangchi (Fermented Soybean)
After sweating, vomiting, or purging, if there is empty irritability and inability to sleep, and in severe cases, profound mental restlessness and discomfort, Zhizi Chi Tang (Gardenia and Fermented Soybean Decoction) is primarily used. If there is shortness of breath, Zhizi Gancao Chi Tang (Gardenia, Licorice and Fermented Soybean Decoction) is used; if there is vomiting, Zhizi Shengjiang Chi Tang (Gardenia, Ginger and Fermented Soybean Decoction) is used. Pathogenic factors transmit from the exterior to the interior and remain in the chest, indicating pathogen located in high regions, where emesis may be indicated. The symptoms to be vomited differ. If no sweating, vomiting, or purging has occurred and pathogens are constrained in the diaphragm, it is excess pathogen, treated with Gouti San (Melon Seed Powder) to induce vomiting. After sweating, vomiting, or purging, if pathogens take advantage of deficiency to remain in the chest, it is empty irritability, treated with Zhizi Chi Tang to induce vomiting. The classics state: "Acid and bitter flavors have the property of surging and draining, belonging to Yin." "Surging" refers to vomiting. To surge and drain empty irritability, the bitterness of Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit) must serve as the Sovereign herb to clear latent heat, and the cold nature of Xiangchi (Fermented Soybean) must serve as the Minister herb.
